NORTH KEY LARGO -- A golf cart accident on Ocean Reef last month landed one woman in jail and her friend in a Homestead hospital.

Joanna Kwant, 24, of Burlington, Ontario, was driving a golf cart with friend Rachel Bowman in the passenger seat at about 2 a.m. March 18 in the employee housing area. After they were asked to leave the off-limits area, Kwant allegedly began arguing with a club employee.

She then allegedly made a sharp left turn on Nirvana Lane, causing Bowman to fall out of the cart, hit her head and lose consciousness. According to witnesses, Kwant got out of the cart and began slapping Bowman in the face apparently to wake her up. A club employee then backed Kwant away from Bowman to prevent serious injury, according to the arrest report.

After police and emergency crews arrived, Bowman was taken to Homestead Hospital for treatment.

Kwant originally told officers Bowman fell off the back of the cart, but witnesses would not corroborate that story.

Kwant allegedly told police she had been drinking after officers found plastic cups and beer cans in the cart. She acknowledged a beer in the cart was hers and told police she had consumed at least three beers, the report says.

Officers asked Kwant to perform a field sobriety test and declined to allow her to consult with her parents who were on scene or to call an attorney. She declined to perform the field test and later would not take a breathalyzer test, the arrest report says.

Kwant was taken to Plantation Key jail and charged with felony driving while intoxicated and causing injury to another.

Crazy Canadian!!! She'll probably pay a fine and that's about it. Here for the breathalyzer test you can request your lawyer be present and its not valid unless they are. So it easy to get out of a DUI. So they've created the non criminal roadside suspension, bar is much lower .05 to get one. They suspend your license, impound your car and fine you. About $500 in fines and impound fee's. Our cops can pull you over for any reason and ask for a breathalyzer test. Since its not criminal no lawyer and failure to blow gets the suspension. We also have drunk driving roadblocks most weekends. So its easy to get caught. I've stopped drinking beer at bars because of it.

and switched over to what? take a cue from Bob, even he is drinking Heineken LIGHT

Drink at home and don't go out if I've had a few beers. Some of the other provinces have adopted our laws now. Her asking for a lawyer before blowing tells me she has experience in Canada.
