BOYNE CITY -- Motors will roar Friday and Saturday, July 13-14, at the ninth annual Boyne Thunder Poker Run in Boyne City.

This year's event includes more than 65 high performance boats, which sets a record at 20 more boats than ever before. The race takes boaters on a 90-mile excursion through Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan. They are cruising for a cause. The poker run is a fundraising event for Camp Quality, a nonprofit organization that establishes interactive environments for children with cancer.

Beginning 6-8 p.m. on Friday, July 13, a boaters dinner will be at Veterans Park pavilion. Items will be displayed at 6 p.m. for a Camp Quality benefit auction, which is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. That same evening from 6-9 p.m. during Stroll the Streets, boat and car enthusiasts will find a variety of Boyne Thunder boats and classic cars in downtown Boyne City.

The Poker Run begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, at the Boyne City Marina. Boaters will be divided into two groups and sent off in heats. Rumbling motors will make their way around the harbor in a boat parade style before heading up Lake Charlevoix toward the open waters of Lake Michigan. On average, the power boats will cruise at 55 mph on the inland lake and anywhere from 60-90 mph on Lake Michigan.

Lake Michigan card stops include heading south to Northport and Elk Rapids and then back to Charlevoix for a lunch stop. After lunch, the participants will head back to the open waters of Lake Michigan to Bay Harbor and Harbor Springs before heading back to Lake Charlevoix. The boaters will wrap up the day with a final stop in Horton Bay and are scheduled to finish between 3-3:30 p.m. at Sommerset Pointe Yacht Club and Marina in Boyne City.

"As a boater myself, I think the event combines a love of boating and being on the water with a sense of accomplishment after taking part in a fundraiser for a great cause. We enjoy helping families make it through something that no one should have to struggle through while doing something we love," said Bob Alger, Boyne Thunder committee member.

Beginning at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, families, friends and visitors are invited aboard a champagne cruise on yachts donated for the day by area boat owners. Once aboard, participants will be served beverages and hors d'oeuvres as they cruise Lake Charlevoix, where they can view the action from the water. The yachts will then make their way to the fifth and final poker run stop where they will raft up and watch as the participants receive their final card. Tickets for the champagne cruise are $75 and can be reserved by calling the Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce at (231) 582-6222.

Beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Sommerset Pointe, there will be a reception. Admission price is $10 at the door. Once they arrive, the participants will turn in their hand of cards, and the best poker hand will win. Concluding the evening and the event, a barbecue will begin at 7 p.m. in Veterans Park in downtown Boyne City. The dinner is open to the public; however, tickets must be purchased for $35 at the Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce located at 28 S. Lake St.
