85 Merc 200 outboard rebuild?

Can anyone guestimate the cost of an overhaul for a 1985 mercury 200 powerhead? As I'm told rings are gone in one cylinder. Maybe not worth rebuilding?

If compression is down on one cylinder it likely has a damage to the bore and needs to be sleeved. They are rebuild-able in most cases. Assuming the crank is good. Ballpark 3500 for rebuild twice or more to replace.

There is good guy up here in Wisconsin that I heard is really reasonable and does alot of rebuilds only on mercs... I think he retired from there 20 years ago and still does tons of work out of his house... I guess the UPS man stops there twice a day...

Adam, you should look to see what is really wrong. Have you pulled the head to look? No sense guessing. Maybe it is just the head gasket.

Did you decide to go with a Vee? Because there are a bunch of those out there for a decent price. But, you have to watch for salt vs fresh.

What is the average life of a salt outboard if taken care of by the average boater?

I know they made a 30 and a 40 open. I did not know of any 24 opens. But, if that is one of his 24's made into an open boat, that would be a sweet center console to own......

It is one of his bottom designs. It was not built by him at Banana, but was one of maybe a couple made by Port Edgewood. If anyone is interested, here is his answer to if it one of his and Don's bottom designs.

That boat was built by Port Edgewood, not me. They only built one or two, don't know why it never caught on as a center console, but for some reason it never took off. Whoever is looking at it, have them check for water in the wooden stringers, transom or under the cockpit floor.

On the positive side, if it has been around this long, it is probably okay.

Thanks Paul. And Charlie. Gonna sit on the cash for awhile and see what comes along. That is still a possibility, it's one cool rig! Seeing that it's not Charlie's, any idea on the build quality?

The guy I trust, Charlie, says to watch the wood. So I'd have it surveyed. Other than that, I'm sure he'd have pointed out anything else he thought was deficient. He knows his stuff, his boats are outstanding.....

The motor would have to have a complete compression test etc. But, it's a one, (or two), of a kind with a Charlie McCarthy/Don Aronow designed bottm. It's got to be one heck of an overall performer.......
