I did that exact thing, 200 merc, 16 sidewinder....couldn't drive the thing, boat would rum about 70 and chime walk all over the place. Ended tearing the transom up.

How solid is the transom on that boat??
The fact that it already has diamond plate on it makes me think it's already soft.

Solid enough, the guy wanted the diamond plate, but really didnt need it, the stress is more on the inside, but I told keep a close eye for cracks. The 200 weighs about the same as the old 130 chrysler, so the only difference is the speed/torque of the v-6.
What tabs are you running? This one was original metal flake gel, but it was trashed, so for budget reasons, I painted it metallic red BC/CC with added metal flake.
