I am agreeing with your concept. I have seen a lot of Ideas on this ,from adding to the deck buildup itself (fun) adding more frames and bulkheads, to stringer like supports (which I use in the race stuff). Panel area is the killer here so reduce it.

Thanks Steve. Is there anything that I have to be carefull of? I was only going to add I think two bulkheads. and replace the existing one but make it much stronger with the circle cut out instead of the three pieces that it is currently made of. I was also going to make them out of balsa but was also thinking about foam.

Just the initial setup is all and the round cutout would be a good choice. Balsa would work but the sheet foam would be the way to go in the 5 to 6 pound range.

I like Coosa (yes Sean i said Coosa ) for that application to, easy to build the part outside the boat (in sections if necessary)and tab them in. Its just a pain to get in my area, no dealers anywhere. I also used a double scored rigid foam that i liked a lot, bagged nicely.

Are non scored foam boards overall stronger?

I have moved past Coosa to phenolic honeycomb panels now.

The easiest way to put new bulkheads in is to cut in some small access areas, or bigger if need be.:sifone:

The foam sheets are omni directional in the physicals like a cube of that material can be assumed to have the ability to be loaded on any face equally without movement now say balsa we take out a cube and load it the end grain faces fair well but the loading on the side of the grain it simply crushes.

With that said and since a bulkhead assumes loading from the panel edges and transfers it to edges again ,then the face laminations have to be robust enough to overcome the lack of support normally offered by the core, and also the stiffness to avoid flutter or Gyration under severe loading.

Remember this. For the most part, coring materials are only as strong as the glass you put on both sides of them. The ideal sandwich, is equal laminate on both sizes. But this cannot always be the case, depending on where the panel is to be used, and how the panel is to be loaded.

Dave you have a dealer in you area if not a state over and why would you want scored foam unless you have a crowned surface or a compound curve ? Dave , not trying be rude just asking . Dave , in the past when ever i put a wind screen on a 46 Skater we used scored foam and still had to score the $hit out of it , just to get the bend we needed to form and shape .

I also like coosa products and an old friend who tried to get PowerQuest up and running turned me on to there product for a wood substitute other then Plywood .

Nida Core is a honey colm design as well. They have it with wood, fiberglass, metal all kinds of skin. Check it out. I used the stuff on my windsheild project because it is SUPER light and when installed VERY strong.

I was talking about the actual honeycomb. Get it without a skin, then like Steve mentioned, you can control the fabric orientation for your needed application.

where at? last order i got was direct and at that time the girl in the office said there was no dealer in my area.

re read my post Artie its a rigid scored sheet that i used. It was double cut (percandicular from side to side) and not bendable. Cool stuff, i like it because i can fab and fit the part then bag it outside the boat re fit it and just tab it in. The double score bags very well and my thought was the resin transfer between the scoring would make a very strong panel. I'll see if i can find a pic of it, pretty cool stuff.
