Superchargers

We are in the market for blowers and see that there are many different philosophies out there. We are looking at the whipple, Psi, and even hamptons new #2 blower that he is guaranteeing to outperform all. Any recommendations would be appreciated, thanks

Whipple, Whipple, or Whipple

I have my choice to use any blower out there. The vast majority of my customers could care less what supercharger I use as long as their engine makes the power that it is supposed to and it is reliable. I have used them all, several times actually. I still build engines with roots blowers, Prochargers, Vortechs, Whipples, Psi's, you name it. My choice is a Whipple. I think they are the best....period. They aren't the cheapest, they aren't the biggest, etc, but they do work well. There is a reason that Merc. went to that style of blower.

Eddie,

The Whipple has some obvious advantages in parasitic loss and the amount of heat added to the intake charge. But why then do you see the monster engines in boats like CMS and Cintron using the big PSI?

Also, what about some of the monster centrifugals that are getting popular in darg racing? I see now they've moved to a front-mounted crank drive on some of these setups.

Chris,
Whipples were being used in drag racing in the alcohol cars until they outlawed them after only 1 or 2 years, I believe. Until then, they were winning quite a bit with the R980 and A980.
In the raceboats, the PSI's work great. They are big blowers that make a ton of power. The 8.3 L Whipple has not been around that long, so guys that have been using the PSI are probably just staying with them because they have worked so well in the past. If it works, then leave it alone. They can be tough to get right in a pleasure boat. They can be hard to get to idle(not impossible) because of heat and distribution problems, air leakage, etc. Race boats don't really care how well they idle. I have used them before and have nothing against them. I would certainly use them again. I just think the Whipple is easier to tune, package(because it is much shorter), and it works better in a pleasure app. because it is a rear entry, axial blower instead of a top entry.
In the 10.5 outlaws, the centrifugals are probably much easier to package in a car then a big blower sticking out of the hood. I don't really mess with drag racing, so I really can't answer any more than that. I would think that if you don't have to run a big rediculous scoop on the hood, then great. Aren't most of those guys running turbos? I have had the opportunity to make some decent power with Prochargers. They absolutely make great power. If anybody says otherwise they are crazy. They can be tough to tune and are rarely consistent in boost from one engine to the next. One engine will take one pulley size and the other engine takes a different pulley size.
I'm not saying the Whipple is the only way to go. I have used pretty much every sc out there and made some good power with them. In a pleasure app., I prefer the Whipple for a few reasons. It is just my opinion and my choice. Nothing else. And for the record, there are a number of ways to make power and they all work. It's all about what you like and what you are comfortable with.
I would love to know if anyone has used a Whipple in an Outlaw car. I know they have used Psi and roots blowers, but has anyone used a Whipple? Just curious.
I was not trying to bash any other sc. They are a bunch of great ones out there. You can make power with any number of blowers.

A little off topic but... You're right Eddie, in outlaw and pro street turbos and nitrous are where it's at. The big PSI's make stupid power, my buddy's 450" motor makes 3000hp. The problem is there's no easy way to bring in the power other then clutch. The boost comes on like crazy and it's hard to control. With nitrous you can arrange 3,4,5 kits any way you like and bring them in as needed, and tailor each kit for track conditions. Turbo's also are a little easier to dial in through boost and timing to control your launch. A lot of teams struggle forever geting it right to get off the line with a decent 60' but once they get it the turbo cars are very consistent. Prochargers for some reason seem to pose tuning issues as well. There is no one we have run in 10.5 or prostreet that has had any consistency with a procharger. They make huge power and there are a couple guys making them work, but locally no one's been able to really dial one in and a couple have switched to turbos. There are guys running Whipples in other classes but overall they don't seem to have a big presence in drag racing..

In answer to the original question.. If going EFI - Whipple. If running carbs - Blower Shop.. My 2cents.. :cheers2:

I have an 8-71 on an intercooler. Looks cool, but if I had it to do over again, I'd go Wipple

I agree with Eddie & have had some similar findings at my shop. Although we have not used or done anything to date with the PSI products. The whipple's are my first choice too & have been great to use to date. I used to have good luck with the earlier efi stuff & the prochargers, but lack of them keeping up to date for the marine applications & too many screw ups in shipping has caused me to not look to use their stuff any more. The other unit we have had good results with has been the Blower shop's products.. ;) Jamie / Lakeside

I believe we decided not to use an intercooler. We want to keep our setup simple and avoid any other way to get water in the engine. Currently looking at hamptons new blower, psi, and whipple for carbs

Why not the rear entry whipple? That is a big advantage for them.
