I was talking to someone recently about EGT's and promised I would find this picture.

If I could only remember who it was.

In any case this was taken back in the early 90's when I first did a pair of blower motors. Fresh water cooled, 89 octane. Made some good power.

We were not shy about holding the throttle down.

Judging from the cherry red glow all the way back on those exhausts, this must have been the 100-hour endurance test :)

Were they Fords? I notice the valve covers...
 
Nope, big block. Can't remember who made the valve covers, they were angled to clear the headers in the boat.

The dyno headers started out pointing straight back, they sagged after they got orange!

I had CMI make me a set of stainless dyno headers after that.
 
PS - we went through a lot of fuel testiing. This was in the basement of the Marina City building in Chicago.
 
Actually it was pretty fat, took 6 jet sizes out after that picture!! This was after 10 minutes or so at full throttle, then the dyno water got too hot.

If it won't do it on the dyno it sure as heck won't run very long in the boat.

Cool!!! When you put smaller jets did the headers cool down a little?
 
Kurt (or anyone else) I have a high resolution scan of the original negative if anyone wants it.
 
Sorry, not sure, I never measured it there. Maybe one of the other engine builders on board can answer.

Pretty cool picture there. Thats a pretty serious sustained pull there , was it a water brake? Wow, if it was it was taking a beating for sure!
My guess would be EGT's were probably about 1400-1450 for that engine to even last 10 minutes any higher that that and the engine would be melting down.
The red glow and overheat in the exhaust system is obviously caused by the heat soak buildup after that type of pull time and I've even seen stainless systems start to do that on sustained load tests. Its obviously also not a good idea to be in the room when this is go'in on, kinda like juggeling handgrenades with the pins loose!
