CBPBA/SeriousOffshore Cambridge Poker Run Photos!!

I just saw the rough cut of the video last night, extremely cool. Marty did a great job and captured some great shots, in between puking his brains out :D :D We will have details shortly on acquiring them for your personal collection. Anyone that did the run will want one, and they did a great job of getting virtually every boat in there.

As Ted said said the video is done and will have copies in the next week or so. I will get information at a later date on how to get one. Thanks again to everyone and cannot wait to do it again!!!!!

Thank you!!!

I would like to thank everyone involved in this year’s Cambridge “Offshore Hero” Poker Run. I have finally caught up from that awesome weekend enough that I can actually sit at the computer to write this.

Let me start with Mikey...much of the credit for making this such a successful event has to go to him. From taking care of the shirts and stickers to rounding up at least half of the entries he always had something new for me. He was able to organize a professional group of photographers and a videographer that were on hand to capture the day’s events. Bruce and Shaun from Imax got some great shots and gave each poker runner a picture in a nice folder. I haven't even had a chance yet to check out all of the pics that Tim Sharkey from Sharkey Images took but the ones that are posted on the site so far are amazing. I just got a preview of the video that Marty from Supercat Racing put together and I have to say it is one of the best poker run videos I have seen.

A couple of months back Ted approached me with the idea of combining the poker run with the race weekend and he assured me it would be a hit. Well he was right and as it got closer to the weekend it began to grow. It actually got to a point that I started considering alternative lunch stops and marinas that could handle the numbers. We ended up with 34 boats and about 120 people, which seemed to be a very manageable number. With the help of Chris and Dave from SeriousOffshore.com we were able to reach out to a larger number of power boaters and had boats traveling from as far as Ohio for the run. We met a lot of new friends and spent a great day on the water.

Then there’s the Johns…but not what your thinking. From the beginning Neitzey was there to offer a helping hand and volunteer for whatever I needed. Well…he was the card stop in Oxford at Schooner’s, the organizer of the radar run and was almost a card stop in Chesapeake Beach. That’ll teach you to volunteer huh. Brandli offered (well maybe I offered) up his sweet ride for the run and it became a great photography platform and VIP transport boat.

Jim Rehill was a big help throughout the event making sure that everyone was docked at Skipper’s and Bay Hundred despite being one of the cancelled card stops. Jim made some of my southern most contacts at Chesapeake Beach and at Skipper’s Pier as well.

Craig Hall took care of the Turkey Point gang and made sure that everyone made it to the lunch stop…well mostly from what I understand.

Todd and Carl from Turkey Point Marina again opened up their facility for the poker runners and offered slips, parking and breakfast the morning of the run.

Brian at Schooner’s Landing in Oxford was gracious enough to allow us to use one of their docks for the first stop out of the Hyatt and gave us a look at a new place that many of us have not seen.

John and his staff at Skipper’s Pier in Deale again served up the “Best poker run lunch you will ever have” for the second year in a row. If you went hungry at the lunch stop it was certainly not their fault. The food kept coming out and was prepared perfectly.

My buddy Dave the pilot from Atlantic Rotors had a blast (maybe too much fun from what I understand) flyin the photo guys around and got some really spectacular shots.

Richard “Woody” Turner and his staff at Turner Yacht Services pulled off a last minute location change for the final stop at Bay Hundred/Knapp’s Narrows Marina that turned out to be perfect. By the time we arrived they had room for all of the boats and we were treated to a couple songs from the artist formally know as Karaoke Mike.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we decided to cut out two stops at the Rod-n-Reel in Chesapeake Beach and Lowe’s Wharf in Sherwood. I was told that Paul at Lowe’s Wharf had chairs lined up on the beach to watch us come in. So if you get a chance this season or in the future make plans to stop in and say hi.

Slimmy Jimmy wasn’t able to make the run prepping his boat for the races but came out to help us as the starter for the radar run.

Keith Kelley and Jim Voege took care of one of the more important tasks which was collecting the money and promoting the event on the website.

I can’t imagine, as long as this is, that I would have missed anyone but if I did please make sure you let me know and I will buy you a beer. Obviously an event like this would not be possible if not for the hard work of all of these people and I cannot thank them enough. Every year I learn a little more and if you had fun this year you certainly are not going to want to miss next year. Have a safe off-season (unless of course you are going to Key West) and I look forward to seeing everyone next year.

Scott “the other Smitty” Smith

Smitty,

Proud to be a part of such an outstanding event, the smiles tell the story !!!

The Videos are in!!!

OK...the remainder of the videos are in and I will mail them out early next week. Also I think I still owe somebody a check for the run, right Jimmy, and a couple people are waiting on photos so they will all go out together. Sorry for the delay in getting this stuff out but everyone has been busy with Key West and the holidays coming up.

Preparations are already underway for next years "Offshore Hero Poker Run" and we will have more details including the date right after the first of the year. We hope to see everyone back next year and it promises to be bigger and better.

Hope everyone has a safe and happy holidays.

Just to clarify with the videos...each boat in the run will get a free video and whatever is left over will be sold for $10 each to cover the cost. The video was sponsored this year by Billy Bevard and Mud Puppy Racing.
