Detroit's Story

Ok. That explains it. You are watching things online in Ft. Lauderdale and making broad sweeping generalizations.

My professional territory is Detroit. The area that you reference is much too small for you to make a reference like "mogadishu on lake st. clair." There are still people in the greater Detroit area that could buy and sell both of us. And I know... because they are my donors.
Go read the St. Clair race threads. (If you are into racing at all) Tell me if that looks like Mogadishu or you are getting a little loose with your comparisons.

I could fly you into Detroit, land you in the city... pick you up in a car and amaze you with food, art, history, culture and lodgings. And nobody would kill you. :)

Yes Boat racing that sounds interesting I will have to learn more about it! No I just hate to see waste and that was the greatest city on earth.

Calling Detroit Mogadishu does not help. And, it isn't accurate.

However... calling for change after years of hegemony, corruption, and bad government is needed.

It has a lot going for it as an industrial location. State taxes are the scary variable.

Has a huge amount going for it But there needs some change from the state level on down, I got scared off by the Gray area of unknowns and surprises.

That vid in the first post was kinda sad, and as Fund says, doesn't tell the whole story of the city.

Some of those images made me think of Clockwork Orange.

I remember how Bob Seegar used to rave about the fans in Detroit.

As was already said, there is a lot of good in Detroit, it just gets overshadowed by the bad.

Once you get out of the bad parts, its a pretty cool area.

It will be interesting what happens, when the rest of the dilapidated houses and warehouses come down, what will replace them.

Growing up close to Detroit, I have to say, I spent a lot of time there, and I always liked going there. In many ways I kind of miss it.
Admittedly, I haven't watched the videos posted, and I may be way off topic here ( but that has been known to happen from me)...

Joe Louis Arena and a Red Wings game - I've seen NHL games in a few different venues, and nothing has compared to seeing a game at the Joe!

The motor city - need anyone say anymore?

Lake St. Clair, North to Huron, or South to my love and my lady Erie.
Detroit has been made a joke on late night TV for many years, but there is alot there to love, and I miss having everything that it has to offer in my own backyard.
It's a damn shame to see the outlying areas and suburbs starting to succumb to the hardships of the city and the state.
And, from what I understand, alot of it is at the hand of the politicians.
Shame.

The video at the top was shot in some bad spots Buoy. I can't say that they don't exist. But any of us in a major, older city can find a place like that to film. The homeless and drug fiends occupy the abandoned housing stock and there you are. But the assumption that this is all that's going on in Detroit is not accurate. I am up there all the time meeting people for work. At their offices, homes, restaurants. All much nicer than mine. Many of them are in the suburbs.
The policticians couldn't have done it without the unions and vice versa. It was pre-written destiny. I some ways, it could have never escaped the fact that all its chips were on manufacturing when the world changed. A more balanced representative and less collusion would have allowed a voice warning to diversify when the getting was still good.
But the truth is that there is still some old money in michigan and some areas are more stable because of the anchor of that older money. Edsel Ford still owns a house in Grosse Pointe. It's still dam hard to get onto Grose Ile for less than $400,000. The classic Mercedes are still rolling into St. Hugo of the Hills in Bloomfield Hills. You still can't wrestle a home on Mackinaw Island out of the hands of the michigan elite at any price.

On the other hand... The Detroit Athletic Club, which has been an exclusive club for many years is going through changes.

I heard that Farmington Hills lost its Maserati dealership. So, obviously those people are hurting... having to drive Bentleys and everything.

Fundy, your house is permanently devalued, as I have slept on your couch..er passed out on your couch... but I didn't hurl :D

Last year in April I was at a meeting and staying down town. I woke up looked out at the river and the Joe Louis arena and thought to myself "wow what a beautiful city" Later that day the redwings were playing in a playoff game and you could feel the electricty in the air. People were out and about. It was really nice. I hope that someday Detroit can trun itself around. I think it will. There are cycles to everything in life.

I'm not saying this is the cause of all the problems but Detroit has been one of the most racially polarized cities in the USA for a long time, back to the early 1900's. Read the book " Arc of Justice" to get an understanding of how bad things were i.e in the 1920's the KKK actually ran a candidate for mayor and had rallies with thousands in attendance.

No question. In the 60s the city burned.
