At what point should people have to buy two plane tickets?

I fit between the seats but not comfortably! At 6'3" my knees are up against the seat in front of my. It can be down right miserable when someone larger sits next to me.

Funny story....packed flight from MIA to LGA coming back from KW. My dad and mom are sitting in a row of 3 seats, everyone is seated and the crew is preparing to leave the gate. I look back and see my mom sitting in the window seat, and my dad in the isle seat with no one in between them! They have the only empty seat in the entire plane!! I curse them under my breath and turn around to get situated when just then in walks this lady who could barely make it down the isle sideways. Took her a good 5 mins to waddle her way to the back of the plane and stop at my parent’s row. I see my dad stand up with this disgusted look on his face to let the lady pass through to the middle seat. Apparently she turned down the offer to sit in the window seat so that my parents could be together, so she made her self at home between my parents. At that moment I honestly think he would have chosen to drive the 1300 miles back home if he had the option to (this was after hrs of delays).

My Dad flies a lot. a few years back he got stuck next to a guy who couldn't fit in the seat. he wrote continental a short note saying something like: "On my last flight I paid for a whole seat but only received half of one"

They sent him a voucher for a free ticket. he never used it or Continental again because he was so ticked over it.

when your fat azz is sitting on two seats, you should pay,,when those people sit down to eat, they don,t mind eating for 3 or 4 people, fat is going to kill our country,,i don,t want my tax money paying for some obeast slob going to the hospital because he cant breath,,or needs knees replaced because they can,t walk..the same thing for smokers if you CHOOSE to smoke all your life, don,t take tax money because you have lung cancer...how about alcoholics that go to the hospital with scerosis of the liver, and want a liver trans plant ,, these people kill me ,,,, eat like a sponge,,smoke like a chimney,,drink like a camel all their lives and when they get old go to the hospital crying I DON,T WANT TO DIE,,, bull sh(t give those organs to kids and a person who was afflicted by nature, not ,,,,,,, i,ll stop,,,, i can go off on this for ever?? to answer your question,, make them pay it their azz takes two seats,,,and thats all i got to say about that,!!:cuss:

anyone over 200lbs should have to pay for 2 seats depending on their height. someone 6+ and 200 plus is acceptable, just not someone 5'6" and 250. no one should have to suffer because some fa a$$ doesn't know how to put the fork down.

I saw this on another forum the other day and feel for the poor guy next to him. I'm 6'5"/250 and coach absolutely sucks. If I can't get first class the only relatively comfortable options are a bulkhead isle or emergency exit seat.

That pic reminds me of a flight I was on back in about 1996 from Atlanta to Tampa and sat next to Paul Wight (The Big Show of pro wrestling fame). I looked like a midget next to him at 7'/pushing 500#. I was hoping he wouldn't fall asleep and start leaning over...

Ok, I am a big guy. I do fit between the arm rests! That being said, there aren't too many guys I met at the SOS party in Key West who comfortably fit in a 17" wide seat. The airlines are really squeezing in as many people as they can and not considering people's comfort. I would pay more for a bigger seat and don't see anything wrong with offering it. Flight to Miami:
Coach: $300
First class: $1200
Why shouldn't there be a comfortable coach seat option for $450 ($450 x 4 = $300 x 6) Cost per row would remain the same!

i agree with this, im a bigger guy too, and i try to fly first class on long flights but WTF should they charge so much for an hour or two flight. i usually go for an emergency row seat, or an isle seat, but my shoulders are way wider than the seat so its either get the drink cart in the shoulder a couple times per flight, or be too close for comfort to someone else.

I had the middle seat in between two fat chicks one time I felt like an Oreo cookie.I would not be surprised if airlines do start charging by passenger weight soon.

It's an outdated system, but 14 CFR, part 25 prescribes that the average person (man, women and child) equals 170#......this is what aviation structural substantiation, weight & balance, and restraint systems are design to. It's an old figure, and a wholly unrealistic one considering that today the average female in the U.S. weight in at 169#, and the average male at 189.8#.

Having said that, there's a small percentage of people today that realistically fit comfortably in the traditional airline seat - which has absolutely nothing to do with comfort at all, but rather $/in^3/flight mile/gallon fuel.

Nonetheless, it's tough to objectively decide where that "point" is, but the fella in the original has surpassed that point.

He needs his own row. :D

Kind of interesting how many of us on this site and with this hobby are luxuriously built...

Sat next to Charles Barkley last year in firt class. Big dude, but no problem in first.
Better yet, I flew to San Jose today on southwest. All coach cattle call seating. Jerry Rice was sitting a couple of rows up from me in an exit row.

This thread could have been a draw for us 2x and 3xt folks. :D

Anybody 6'3" and over knows the thin rod that I speak of on the back of the seat forward, because after one 3 hour flight you have a permanent imprint.

Did I see Buoy on this thread? He only needs half a seat, right? :D

Guys like Jerry Rice always beat me to the exit row. :(

I don't have a problem with a physically big person sitting next to me but FAT people gross me out !!!!
and
Why do the fat people breath so heavy during the whole flight ? Is it from the long walk in the airport ? I always fear they are going to die and I'll have to sit trapped next to a dead FAT person.
