Al Copeland-1980

Who did this filming? Not bad film work, but the commentator sucks.

That would be our own T2X. I believe he did these on the fly (literally . . . in the chopper :D).
He is to offshore what Frank Gifford is to football . . . .

Definitely not Rich on that one.

Now back to the thread. There is a pic out there of Popeye's in huge seas. Looks like something out of Deadliest Catch. I believe it was in one of the races in Europe. If anyone has a copy they should post it. Very cool pic.

Actually that's not me doing the announcing........I started with Phil shortly afterward.......

I believe that is the Popeye's boat that landed on top of Joel Halpern's Cat, Beep Beep, injuring Joel fatally, the following year at New Orleans...... The accident occured in the pre race milling area when Popeye's was planing off and the Beep Beep, Aluminum Cougar sort of drove under the bow of the monohull. I saw Al shortly after and he was devastated. There was a lawsuit and some settlement was reached. I may be wrong, but think that was Al's first race boat. He came back into the sport, thankfully, with the old Satisfaction, Cougar Cat which he raced for a short time. He also raced Mike Drewry's Open class, outboard, 36' Maelstrom in one event, prior to unveiling the first of his four engined Cougar Superboats.

That accident is the reason why you have the pre-race off plane clockwise circles that are still in use today. This assures that all boats are going in the same direction and at a slow speed. In the old days the boats randomly ran around waiting for the start boat to pick them up.....

T2x

Here are a few pic's I shot of Popeyes racing on the Detroit river in the early 80's.
