What got you into boating?

Grew up in the midwest, lakes only, never really thrilled me much. We moved to the coast in CT when I was 13 or so and it put the zap on me big time, loved the big water. Dad bought a small sailboat and it started my life on the water.

We always had boats when I was a kid. I learned at a young age you could pull crazy tail when you have a sweet boat. Thats all it took. =)

Maybe it was my parents taking me with them to look at a boat in 15 degree weather when I was 2 weeks old. But I have a feeling it started about 9 months and 2 weeks before that...:cheers2:

I know what you mean.. I have labbed props on my sperms too. :driving:

Grew up in the 80's in Boca Raton, FL. Working in the pool business and at a marina in high school one of the only benefits to working weekends was seeing all the "go fast" boats screaming by on the ICW (no speed limits then). A kid I went to school with drove his dad's Top Gun all the time (dad made him and guests wear helmets when running wide open). That boat back then cost more than my parents house at the time!

I even love hearing the sound of a go fast boat....a couple years back I was atleast a mile from the waterfront and heard a boat take off, slow down (no wake zone) then take off again. Thinking about where I was at the time I called a buddy who lived nearby to ask if he was out on the boat today? He replied he was indeed on the boat as we spoke (idling again). Boat was a 38 Powerplay w/525's and we still laugh that even a mile west of the ICW the boat was still loud and clear!

I grew up around boating but was never around anything more than you're typical fishing boat. I fished a few times on Lake Erie with my father and towards the latter 70's you'd see an Excalibur or Scarab out running. Maybe once a summer.

It was the spring of my senior year of high school. I had a dentist's appointment one afternoon. While sitting in the waiting room, leafing through an issue of Sports Illustrated, I came across a story about Betty Cook and offshore racing in general. I was so intrigued that I set out to find out all I could. I typically reduce the whole story to "...Betty Cook got me into the sport in the 70's". :)

Here's the article-

You know what this is like one of those deja vu deals!!! Growing up my parents owned a huge resort and the weekends were filled with boats so I did that thing. In 1978 I spent part of my sophmore year in High School in Marathon, FL anyhow skipping school and hanging out on Sombrero Beach one day I hear this boat just hauling balls louder than hell....now mind you boating to me especially loud ones were like Tahiti, Sanger, Hondo flatbottoms and jets along with HydroStream, Allison, STV outboards....but all of a sudden this huge boat appears with KAAMA down the side and I said holysh.t bro's thats me right there went to the marina and got to meet Beety Cook, Jon Connor, and Don Holloway along with some of the crew and the rest I should say is history!!!!!!

My dad dragged v drives and circle raced in AZ and SoCal in 70s/80s. Dad had a jet ski rental business in Lake Havasu, AZ Jetski rentals, and grew up knowing the Hallets and chettah bob. Been around boats my whole life but when we moved to the midwest, out went the jet boats and in came the Big twin V bottoms. A mach 1, 3 fountains and a Black Thunder later, here i am. Party on

As a sub-question, how many among us once owned a white sportcoat and a pastel t-shirt?

;)

And strangely, There really was not a lot of boat action in the series after the first show (39' Chriscraft?). Mostly the 38KV sitting at the dock or once sitting there spying on someone with a Lambo Jalpa.

"Out Where The Buses Don't Run" and "Pay Back" from season 2 have some good boat action.
