'86 Key West and other sites Pix

Sodus Point Lake Ontario. This was where Ben Kramer was hurt and the race was black flagged before the boats hit turn one. Art told me as he was milling water was coming over the deck every wave and he wondered, "what am I doing here."

Is it possible that is '87?

He was injured pretty bad in '86 Sodus Point and leased a boat for Miami to continue their season and earn US1. They campaigned US1 in '87.

I'll double check but Saccenti was badly injured, Ben continued racing..... The Accident was in Rochster, NY 1986. Bobby suffered a basil skull fracture, one of the few human beings to survive an injury like that.

You are right that a boat was "loaned" to Kramer by Sal Magluta to lock up the championship. Ben raced 3 wks after the accident and that's why US1 is on the Apache. Some commentary from Ben's interview with Rich Lurs at that race; "Rich:Ben you're in a brand new boat today, do you feel comfortable? Ben: Nah, I'd much rather have my boat and Bob Saccenti but Sal was gracious enough to let me borrow the boat."

If you notice, Bobby was not on the sticks for Key West...he was still recovering.

Key West is the first race of the year. That would explain the US 1. Funny thing is it was earned in a cat.

Thanks and sorry for double checking.

Back in the days the US1 was the # for the NATIONAL CHAMP,,,KW was the worlds,,,so i don't think it has anything to do with that.

I understand National Champ can fly their earned #1 in Key West.

I checked SBI rules and it remains as it has for years.

No problem!

I just finished watching the VHS and confirmed it was definitely 86'. Apache earned the US1 in the Cat, borrowed Seahawk and raced the Apache in the Worlds.

Apache won the 3rd race but overall Systems won the worlds in Open that year.

Popeyes Cat won 3rd race, followed by Popeys V and Maxon.

Apache won Open in the 3rd race followed by Systems and Seahawk broke. overall points winner for open class worlds that year went to Systems..

I don't remember the other classes results but I can go back and check.
