Kids' educational downloads...

Anyone know of a place to download educational software for kids? My 5 1/2 year old loves to play with the computer, but there isn't much on my computer for her. Moreover, I'd feel better about letting her play with it if the games were educational. She does some sight words, but doesn't really read yet. Nevertheless, she picks up computer stuff pretty quickly. I'd rather find free downloads first, to see if she likes educational games.

Thank you for letting me post this here, since I got banned from singlemoms.com.:sifone:

I fell for this some years back. I figured the better the technology the better the educational experience. I was SOOO wrong. Today I have two college students with sub-par reading, writing and interaction skills.

Don't get me wrong, they were both top of their class in high school and 4.0 college students- both doble major Chem/pre-med, but both struggle with reading and neither is stellar at interactive communication. This is purely because they were raised with computers and technology. Today they struggle with their college work as it's so much more reading-based than high school was. They also communicate poorly as they have become dependent upon texting, e-mailing, etc. Believe it or not, calling someone and asking them a question is a barrier and a difficulty for them- especially if they don't know the person. Their writing skills are substandard as well. The best way to learn to write is by example. If you don't read...

Do yourself and your child a favor. Steer towards books.

My sister is an SK teacher at a private Jewish day school and I believe they use the computers for quite a bit of teaching. As a kid my mom bought me this computer program called reader rabbit, but I believe I was older at that point (7-8y/o).

having a computer now for three years I see that my handwriting skills have seriously depreciated , I had to send a money order and did not recognize my own writing.

Oh I know that feeling. I have been taking my laptop to class for the last 3+ years and this year I am taking a coastal processes (really cool stuff btw!) class. I decided to hand write in this class because of all the graphs and what not and my hand writing has gone to chit!
