Cleaning the Bottom of the Boat

Due to certain financial constraints, I was not able to have a boat lift this year. Brown algae (and other stuff) is now on the bottom of my boat.

I plan to pull it out soon and store it for the winter. As soon as I get it on the trailer I want to clean the bottom.

I have hear that vinegar is good for cleaning algae off the bottom.

What would you recommend?

I have used on/off many times and it seems to go pretty good. The vinegar will take off water spots really well. Make sure you wax it after using those harsh chemicals because they take off EVERYTHING.

Hot pressure washing will probably get most of it. Then use Ringo pool cleaner, it works the same as ON/OFF only without the acid eating effects. Its also in somewhat of a gell form so it clings to the hull for a while.

Inbetween swears by Sno-Bowl, the toilet cleaner. Less harsh than On/Off.

I like Sno-Bowl toilet bowl cleaner for the hard stuff. But Slimmy Grimmy (West Marine) is good for the lighter stuff.

There is a product called SLX, gel like Ringo, not as nasty fumes wise and won't burn the crap out of you like On/Off.

I have heard the slimy grimy works well.

I personally use Bio Kleen hull cleaner, works like a charm . Spray on spray off, but you need to wax after words

Sno -bowl works just as good as on and off and it is MUCH cheaper. The algae should come off pretty good with a pressure washer.

I used On-Off two, three times a season on a Mako I had for twelve years and never had any of the burning conditions mentioned. We would do it on the lawn, wet the grass down and have at it, no harm to the grass or hull.

A lot of boat maintenance outfits use muratic acid.

I use on/off 2x a year with a brush but I cut is at 3/1 in a bucket and brush it on the hull. Start one one side and work my way around the boat wiping it on.....go around the boat a second time then rinse....DONE!!!

I have used muratic acid also, it works well, we cut it, but it is also free cause we have stock piles of it at work for the pool. still pretty nasty stuff to handle

Sno Bowl works fine. Just do not let it sit on the boat. Rinse after just a few minutes.....

I pressure wash, then sno bowl, then pressure wash. Usually completely clean.

Another vote for snow bowl.

I put it in a spray bottle and shoot it on,
the brown stuff then comes right off,
and it doesnt trash the sprayer like
muratic acid does.

Bio Clean here too works well, not as nasty as Zing!
Lake Winnebago leaves a nasty film, even after a weekend in the water.
Brown and scummy. Won't wipe or scrub.
