Boating Accident Wisconsin

It's not just Go Fasts that can be a problem on the Wolf. Can't Begin to count the number of people skiing on that river on a busy traffic day and the fishing boats that decide to anchor in the center on a blind curve to fish. You have to ask yourself....would I play in the middle of the Interstate during rush hour? Common sense goes a long way to solve some problems. I myself have to run 35-40 mph to keep on plane. There's a lot of cruisers and smaller craft run'n 25-30 that I have no choice but to pass, which at times requires adding throttle to hit the pockets between on coming traffic. I'm not say'n there's no Go Fasts out of line, but sometimes things aren't always as they appear. I won't even get on the subject of the Jet boats that run that river.

If you trim and tab down how slow can you hold plane?

Before reading your post I really felt we could all coexist. However if you cannot safely plane below 35 MPH then I may need to rethink that.

Since you posted the analogy of kids playing on the highway during rush hour please allow me to post one also. Would you have a drag race in a school zone 5 minutes after school lets out?

The Wolf River is neither a highway nor a school zone. It’s more like College Avenue downtown Appleton.

BTW I can hold plane from 14 MPH. At 14 I throw a big wake but I can hold plane. Our boat is a Sea Ray 280 Sundancer, twin 5.0's w/Bravo III drives. I know I'm likely the slowest member here. On my best run, everything perfect I hit 50 MPH. Most days I'm about 48.

Like sands of the hours glass.............this is why I don't go up there! Stay away

I haven't been up the river for about 5 years maybe longer, way to crowded. If I would ever go back up I'd take the jet boat.

I'm not condoning anyone screw'n around, no matter what kind of boat. I'm just stating that the Go Fasts are not the only wrong doers. Sure, I could drop my K-Planes and tuck in, but the people on shore have a bit of an issue with 3' rollers wash'n over the shore line. Not to mention the smaller boats I would swamp in the process. 35 mph really is not all that fast. I will knock it down off plane if there's no room to pass, but if there's a pocket it's better to stay on plane and keep the wake to a minimum.
There are days too when I won't even consider the river because the traffic is too heavy and just not enjoyable....hence common sense

Hey Wayne, I use to go up river with my 29 Fountain but even that felt big for the river, I've never had the big boat up there same goes for Omro just to shallow to risk it. You home this fine weekend? I just got back from pulling the jet boat out for the year. So at least I kinda went boating today, was it nice out to, 70 sunny and 6 inches of chop perfect for that little boat.

Most of my Wolf run'n is on week days. An occassional weekend, but it's usualy too busy to enjoy it. I run to Omro all the time and use to do the Berlin corn roast. I won't go past Omro on a low year though. Did the Convoy today. Just posted a thread in the Bar about it. Will be leaving soon for the East. We still need to get together B4 you head South....and I better stop hijacking this thread. Off to C&B:)

This is my first post here. I’m not new to boating forums, see clubsearay dot com where I contribute on a regular basis.

First and foremost, I am glad there were no fatalities.

We slip our boat at Skipper Buds in Oshkosh WI. I’ve seen this for sale 42’ fountain brokered boat parked in the round about all summer.

A small percentage of boaters are behaving in an irresponsible manor along the Wolf River in Wisconsin. From personal observation only, it’s some of the go-fast boaters that travel between Fremont and Lake Poygan that is the issue.

This is causing a local warden to gain support to add significant boating restrictions in this area. If passed, this will not only affect the ‘go-fast’ boaters but many others as well.

I’ve experienced being passed by go-fast boats racing each other in this area, I’ve seen go-fast boats operating at high speeds in close proximity to other boats going much slower, boats that are much smaller, aluminum fishing boats, house boats, etc.

Guys I need your help.

Let’s work together.

If a comrade wants to race, and you are up for the challenge, go out into the lake away from other small boats and shore. If you see the high speed behavior of another go-fast boater or any other type of boater, say something to the person when you next see them, don’t join them in the race.

If we don’t all work together toward safe boating, we will all end up losing this area as a boating destination.

I’ve heard ideas as extreme as making the entire river slow no wake 24/7 and limits of horse power and boat size.

Ask yourself, would you rather have the ability to continue to run this river in a a safe, reasonable manor or not at all?

Please guys, let’s work together. Let’s jointly support each other at discouraging the behavior of the minority that will cause the laws to change to ruin it for everyone.

Look at the Waupaca King Chain of lakes. If we don’t work together these are the type laws that will come over to the Wolf River.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Hi Doug and welcome to SO. Thanks for your input on this thread. We all need to work together to keep boating safe.

Welcome. Thanks for your thoughts and consideration. I appreciate everything you said and I agree with it all. Our mission and my personal philosophy on boating is much the same - safety first and always. We encourage safe, comfortable operation for everyone both within our own vessels and for those who boat around us. I too am growing tired of a small handful of bad apples ruining things for the rest of us when things like this happen. I know nothing of the area, but I can imagine what it's like from what I've seen described here. It sounds like a tight, winding area that does not lend itself to high speed operation. We cannot claim anything known about the actual speed of that fountain when this happened but logic would tell us that this probably would not have occurred at low speeds. Shame. Glad they're all okay, but the results speak for themselves. I don't ever hesitate telling someone that they acting stupidly, and I think if we foster a proper attitude towards safe boat operation eventually people will catch on and we won't be restricted by the authorities, only by our own common sense.

Again, welcome and thanks!
:)

Very well put.....
Jr.

Below is a link to the Wolf River. It has an "S" bend and at one point, a small island that splits the river in two. But the thing the river has the most of is traffic. On the weekends its a very busy place with fast boats, slow boats, tubers, wake-boarders and pontoon boats.
