Merc 700's NXT package??????

I have thought since the begining of this package the transmission was the weak link. I know of 2 Fountains with 700's/6's that ran Jammin on the James Poker run, one 42, and on 38. Both had been warmed over by someone, Dustin perhaps, the 38 had been in a video earlier in the summer running 124 mph at 6000 rpms. Stock 700's wont turn that. Both boats had problems, one motor, and one transmission, so the answer to your question "how will they hold up with more than 700 hp", I quess that goes back to the old saying, depends on how you use them.

I just spent several days with 2 boats with 700's.

One is a 39' OL with side-by-side engines, but jack-shafted, close-mounted drives. So far, he has been through ten (10) transmissions, probably related to the driveshaft angle. One side now has a BAM transmission as a test unit.

The other boat is a triple 700 46' OL. His center engine shut down in rough water, and refused to re-start, although it would crank over. Fortunately, he was able to get going and run the 38 miles back to the marina on the outer two.

The boys from Typhoon also reported a number of input shaft failures, but did not give me details or a count. It will be interesting once people start pushing more than 700 hp through these drives...

Was Chuck able to get the center engine running later on?

It was still unresponsive when it went on the trailer.

They fixed it, it was just a bad IAC.

Seem's very common for the IAC's to go bad on all the EFI engines I've come to notice...... Probably a good idea to keep a spare onboard. But hey, my carbs are always flawless! ;)

As long as the jets are in tight :biggrinjester:

That's WEIRD!!! The engine quit at speed, then wouldn't even "pop" when they cranked it. I failed an IAC on my Innovation 600 this spring, and all it did was.....idle poorly. What kind of screwed up software is Merc running?

I searching for some info on the nxt drive and trany. I've got a broken trany, a nxt with the skag broken off, prop shaft came out and went to the bottom after it flew off and hit the other drive and cleaver. The casting on the drive always looked more porus than the other. Has anyone else had probs with the castings.
Thank for the info

Yeesh. Congrats on the Shock 35 though - nice rig.

Sounds very a-typical of that package from what I know and have watched

The Camires have been running the 700/nxt packages in their 39 HARD for a long time with no issues. Thats a heavier rig.

I have heard of tranny probs over the last couple years, has Merc got some of this "STUFF" fixed????? Is it a reason 2 take these engines/ drives out of consideration when short season boating & reliability R of SERIOUS concern??:confused:
