Which entities ,individuals , etc , were the best influence in offshore racing ,( open ocean runs , and ,or closed in close circle " stadium " type racing ?)

P.S. ( cig daze this was really what I was after on the thread ' who is the worst ? " This I hope is more to youre liking . My bad :)

Mike A,
APBA LLC Offshore had it going! They brought spec racing, brackett racing and a whole lot of boats to every venue.
They also brought one of the biggest companies in the Country in as a sponsor-GM. Remember the "lease" program?
APBA also had great venues, remember the dry pits in the Daytona Track? Remember the Cleveland race-where you could watch from the pits? Remember going to Cape Cod??
TV every Saturday morning on Speedvision!!!
Mike and Miklos had it going on! They "set" the standard other organizations strive for.
Although I miss the LLC, I think OPA-Smitty have stepped up to the plate and I love racing with these guys!!!:)

although I am pretty new to the scene, the stories of back room deals, this that and every other thing about various people, and adding the fact he is still around the boating world, I vote for Brownie...never heard nor read a single negative thing about him.

I would like to hear more about "back room deals."

I totally agree.

Don't know about the past, but in the past 5 yrs it has to be Smitty and the OPA. Without them we would all be poker running.

In my short time on the block, and only bearing witness to offshore racing for the 15 or so years that I've been interested, I have to completely agree. Nothing Tops the 2000 Worlds in my book (except maybe the 2001 worlds in Key West).

But this thread says it all.... The guy asks for 4 decades.......and gets the last 5 and 10 years.

Love him or hate him, where do you feel Reggie Fountain figures into this discussion? He has certainly been a big influence with sponsorship, manufacturing raceboats (US and internationally) and hosting races in Washington, NC.

Hold on a second Rich I just said both were great venues......The best racing I remember out of all of it was the eighties hands down....The professionalism and move to mainstream it has to go to Alweiss bro....But the eighties you could never ever repeat it!!!!

Dont let me forget to add this the reason I got into this insanity was because I was skipping school one day at Sombrero Beach in Marathon and had the luxury of meeting and watching Betty Cook test her Scarab
