55 MPH Group in Poker Runs

I just got off the phone with Carl Mcbride, the Performance Boat Club of Canada president. He told me that the club is introducing a new class this year designed to allow people to poker run in a more relaxed environment and not be as hard on their equipment. The 55 mph group is intended for boat owners with boats that have the capability of running anywhere from 55 mph to over 100 mph. 55mph is a very comfortable cruising speed for all club members and also lets members take in more of the beautiful scenery the area has to offer. Dave P from the New Jersey Club offered some great advice on this class which has taken off in a big way there. Sounds like a great idea to me!

Have any of the board members ran in the 55 mph group in Jersey or elsewhere?

This is a great idea! that way the smaller boats don't get eaten alive and maybe the poker runs would see an increase in boats:26:

I think it is a geat idea as well. I have a slow boat and would do more events if I knew there would be fellow slow boaters at the event. I am sure if if I pulled my ECM 90% my hours are @ 3500 rpms which would put me right at 53mph or so.

It's a great idea Peter for a few reasons. At FMO we usually have enough boats to have 2 or sometimes even 3 groups based on their capabilities. When there is a slow group it encourages smaller boats to come out and join us who may be otherwise intimidated by the "big dogs". We feel the future of the sport depends on including the smaller boats. I've seen more than one these (nameless) smaller boats sold or traded in for a Nor Tech or other like boat. Good for the boat builders as well.
Then there is increased safety etc. which we all have a stake in.
I look forward to running with you guys this summer in the over 55 MPH group.:)

I want a 50 mph class or big water for the Cary 50 and then I can play too....or I will just bring up the rear, it dosen't matter as long as can have fun too.

You don't need to run 100+ to run in a PR. I've rode in many and we run 55-75....mostly closer to 55-60. Not having a "fast enough" boat is just an excuse....come out and play with the rest of us.

Remember... It's an event.. not a race.... :leaving:

Did anyone else ever hear this?? :26:

Good idea.

Actually, the Performance Boat Club of Canada has run events with an above and below 60 group for years. Only in the last couple of seasons have the slower speed groups been neglected because quite frankly, only the big and fast guys were attending events.
In 1991, from the very first Muskoka Lakes charity poker run that I organized for the club, we often had 3 groups. Under 60, 60 to 80 and then above 80. Back then, over 60 was fast and over 80 was race boat territory. Nowadays, average runabouts run 55 to 60 and just about every go fast runs near 80 with many capable of ludicrous speed :).

Returning to a slower speed group will hopefully get more people back into the run game.
