Riviera Myan Mexico?

I've been telling my wife I want to take a week long trip and get away. So she tells me today she booked us a trip to Mexico to the Mayan Palace at Riviera Myan in Mexico.

I've never been to Mexico and know nothing about this place. My wife has never been but our next door neighbor says it is awesome....I am not so sure about this trip.

Anyone ever been? Thoughts and opinons? Should I leave the nice Rolex or Omega watch at home? HELP!

the Mayan Riviera is absolutely beautiful.....stay on the resort and you'll be fine......although thousands of people do it with no issues, its when people grab a taxi and head into town on their own at night to hit the clubs that's when you can get into problems you hear about in the news.....

when we were down there we met this couple from Minneapolis and it was the guys 9th time to the area (he is a Nestle's sales rep)......we grabbed a cab and went into Playa De Carmen for the whole evening, it was great.....I was a little nervous but Tony knew where he was going and told the taxi driver exactly where he wanted to go (the downtown party district), knowing some Spanish didnt hurt either, went to some restaurants and clubs, we had a great time......some pretty shady characters on that strip however.......I would have never have done something like that on my (our) own though.....no way.

My experience was a little different. Was down there last summer and we went into Playa 3 times, once at night. Never once felt uncomfortable. Stayed in the tourist areas and didn't go wandering down dark alley's but thats just common sense. I love it down there, we'll be heading back to Aventura soon.

I was down there with jmeng for his wedding. I agree it was pretty tame. You probably wont get into trouble unless you go looking for it. Oh and its beautiful and the natives were very friendly and courteous.

thanks everyone for calming my nerves. Due to my physical impairment of losing my entire left leg 6 years ago and having my arms broken to bits and bolted back together I am very cautious about where I go because I can not defend my self anymore.

I hear about a lot of bad things about Mexico and am a little freaked out about going to this country and being out of my comfort zone.

Mike, if the resort you're looking at is anything like ours you really don't have to leave at all. We did just to see some different stuff and because the woman wanted to shop but I could have easily sat at the pool bar all week and been happy. You're safe as can be at the resort.

very much true.......if it wasnt for that couple we met we would have just stayed at the resort all week and that would have been just fine.

Its extremely relaxing and comfortable. You will love it. We've been there 6 years straight and no issues at all. Everyone there is very nice and helpful. The resort is the place to go. You won't want to leave the resort anyway. They have everything you need and take care of it all. Seriously, relaxation is in store for you. Don't worry about it. It's more painful to go through the USA airports than anything you'll encounter in Mexico. I've been there many, many times. We plan to retire there. The Riviera Maya is absolutely beautiful and the beaches are just what you need. The weather is perfect. The beer is always flowing. Just enjoy yourself. It will be the best vacation you've ever had.

I second that. We got married at the Aventura Spa Palace. No need to leave. They have everything top notch.
