Your best defense again viruses is smart surfing. your windows firewall is about as good as any commercial one, so there's no need to pay for one, and as long as you know what you're doing and what you're downloading, more than likely, you'll be fine. For additional peace of mind I use AVG...it's free, and works about 99% as good as Mcafee.

I believe that is only good for a year subscription and then it is on your dime. At least that is how it worked for me here in Illinois.

De-install McAfee, and download SpyBot! It's free!

I would have said exactly the same thing.

I ause AVG free too, and also run Spybot Search & Destoy about once a week (also free.)

The McAfee suite is a huge resource hog. My Mom's subscription recently expired, so I cleaned the whole mess off her pc - it runs 2x faster now.

Yep, quite common...McAfee is in everything and always scanning and "protecting" you...as such, it takes up a huge amount of your computing power. I hate it, you're better off without it.

I just installed Norton 360 on everything. It runs much faster and starts very quickly. it also keeps your browser clean and has a built-in registry cleaner. The last feature really makes a big difference. I cleaned my laptoip last night and it ran 30-40% faster immediately. That's just from 2 or 3 weeks of not running it.

is norton still a major system hog?? I gave up on it years ago, it would protect but also bring a system to it's knees.
