Yamaha outboard, replacement powerhead options?

inbetween

Any suggestions for getting an outboard powerhead rebuilt? '94 200hp Yamaha 2 stroke carbureted. A quick Google search brings up A LOT of results, but searching some of those names leads me to believe there aren't many reputable people or businesses doing quality outboard work. New is out of the budget. Any thoughts on used outboards?

Thanks,
Adam

What's wrong with it? Just worn out, or a piston sticking through the side of the block?

Rattles pretty bad internally. Wrist pin, loose rod bearing, something along those lines. Still runs and idles smoothly, just loud as hell. It's only run maybe 5 or 6 minutes since we first heard the noise. I didn't disassemble it.

Do you have the model and serial number. Simmon's is saying they had several different possibilities for the internals.

He also said parts are very hard to come by, but first is the model and serial numbers.

You should be able to buy a new or/rebuilt Powerhead for it. I had My 200 Merc done for $2K and that was a Saltwater motor that had to be cut apart, So I didn't get the

Core Exchange $$.

On a side note, When My Mechanic put it back together, He didn't clean the Exhaust Chamber on the Upper , So it became an issue , and was probably My original problem to begin with. :smash:

Do you know if the powerhead replacement came from a company that also does Yamaha's? And if so, do you trust them now?

You may be right. It seems the replacement powerheads are in the $4000 plus range from Jasper and HydroTec. I wonder about that Blackbird Motors on Ebay that has 100% positive feedback. They're in PA.

I got scared by all the poor reviews for just about everyone online. Jasper doesn't do my particular powerhead. I bought used. I was able to hear it run and do a compression test. Sounds good, seems to run well and compression was 7 psi different from low to high. Hopefully I made the right choice.
