Looking like the nautical cousin of
a stealth bomber and moving with
the speed of an offshore racer, an 88-
foot experimental military watercraft
is generating double takes among
boaters in Florida Keys waters.
The Stiletto is in Key West preparing
for operations with the Joint
Interagency Task Force South, an
intelligence and counter-smuggling
arm of the CIA, Army, Navy,
Coast Guard and Drug Enforcement
Agency, based at the Truman
Waterfront, according to the U.S.
Navy Southern Command.
“It’s a testing platform,” Lt. Cmdr.
Melissa Schuermann said. “What’s
nice about this deployment is that
they can test some of these new
technologies.”
The Defense Department “testing
platform” is expected to be on
its way to the Caribbean soon, but
details about its capabilities and its
mission are in short supply.
“In terms of what it’s here for and
its capabilities, I really don’t know
and can’t speak to that,” Coast Guard
spokesman Matthew Meinhold said.
Schuermann was equally evasive.
“Specifics of that mission is what I
can’t tell you,” she said. “We can’t be
very specific about the work they’ll
be doing.”
The Stiletto is fitted with myriad
antennae and other electronic gear,
and has advanced computer systems
designed to interact more efficiently
with allied vessels, according
to information posted on military
Web sites.
Constructed with a lightweight
carbon fiber composite, the 60-ton
