Small house deck ideas

(I'm going boating later today so don't kill me!!!)

Looking to build a small deck off the 2nd story of a house. 20' x 8'

Any ideas to make it custom and stand out a bit. Going with Fiberon Tropics

Thinking of going with 6" & 4" boards to set it off a little but was going to see what other ideas were out there.

We are going to do a deck drainage system under the deck with a brick patio underneath. Leading off that will be a brick sidewalk with a raised brick planter bed running along the side of the house around to the front door. Kind of like in this pic but different- using same brick as house and going to be higher.

I'm going to get some nylon screen and have beanbags sewn in the bottom of them, then mount some gutters under the deck with the screening stuff in them. That way if we wanted to hang out on the patio we could pull the screening out of the gutters, drop it down and boom- got a screened shaded patio for a cookout or some thing. Some thing like in this pic but wider and stored in nice copper gutters mounted under the deck when not in use.

doesn't look like the same girl you were with in KW. it looks like you are getting more progressive.:sifone:

Fiberon offers the industry's first 10-year Stain and Fade warranty along with a 20 year performance warranty. Could be a sales pitch or full of fine print.

My builder uses fairly decent brands standard and uses this brand. He buys from a local owned well respected supply house so them carrying it added some weight in my decision as well. The sample decks they have seem to be holding up fairly well.

I think the darker colors are fairly new so not much info on them out there that I know of.

Side note- I set 4 planks of different colors outside for 2 days. 85 degrees and direct sun- the darker colors weren't noticeably warmer than the lighter colors but they did stay warmer longer after the sun went down. Nothing I'm too worried about- just an observation from my testing.

I'm not touching that comment- I'll vouch for Sunkin if Sunkin vouches for me but I'm not sure who is vouching for them NY/NJ guys who will remain unnamed by me. Had to be there- really!

I used metal roofing panels turned paint side down down for my under deck material...works great!

Tuftex DeckDrain Panels are attached to Tuftex Slope Building Brackets to create a deck ceiling and drainage system.

Lowe's sells this stuff in white, smoke, tan, clear and green. $18 for a 20' section and then idiot proof brackets that you can slope drainage where you want. I'm sure I'll test the idiot proof part since I'm doing this project (drain, not deck) myself but the good thing is I have free health insurance.

I think these guys make the best under-deck waterproof system out there. It meets all specs for underdeck living area and you don't have that damp space in-between the upper part of the joist and the lower.

We have a paver brick patio outside our basement walkout which is covered by a wood deck with no drainage system, and it sucks. Every time it rains the sand from the paver brick bubbles up and lays on top of the brick, it always dirty down there. Two years ago we bought the new type of sand that you wet after you apply it and it is suppose to harden. Ian power-washed just about all the sand out first, let it dry, did everything the directions said to yet it never hardened and we continue to have the same problems. We used the same sand on our paver brick front porch and it worked fine. To add to our problem we have two small rock retaining walls on each side of the patio, and the chipmunks are constantly tossing piles of dirt on the patio. Knowing what I know now I would have done stamped concrete, much cleaner and a lot less maintenance. I also would have done a mortar and brick retaining wall instead off rocks. Hopefully with the drainage system under the deck you will not have a problem, but if you have not already planned to, I would use the hardening sand. I really like the look of the deck material you choose.

The bricks are going to be concreted in, slight grade for drainage (is all above grade), those little slots so they an "breathe" and so on. No sand and it is not like pavers- been there/done that and didn't like it for the same reasons you say.

The raised brick planter along the side of course will be raised but doesn't have to be- just like the look. I think it adds dimension and depth perspectives to give that "WOW" look without spending as much of that "WOW" money.

I like stamped concrete but since the house is brick we are doing it all in brick.

The drainage things I'm looking at are $18ish from Lowes for a 20' x 4' section. They have these L type brackets with grooved increments- every truss you go down 1 increment in the direction you want the water to flow and overlap the panels in that direction so nothing ever flows over the seam. At the end I'm going to put either a gutter or cut a pipe in 1/2 to collect the water and then drop it down a downspout.

I'll let you know how it turns out- looking at late Augest settlement, then going on va-kay til mid-Sept and will start it some time shortly after that.

I'm meeting with the builder Thursday about the patio but this part of the deck they are going to start framing up this week I hear.

The deck supports are going to come down to the patio so going to have him work them up in brick as well just to try to keep it "custom" looking.

Here is the idea- stole this pic but doesn't look very good with all the HVAC stuff in this one.

So this deck is going to be 8' x 20'

The 4" only comes in 12' & 16' sections where the 6" comes in 12, 16' & 20' sections.

Would it look better going 6" x 20' so there are no seams or have seams and go with the 4"/6" alternate boards?

you might be able to rip the 6" pieces and router the edge back to factory specs, it will fade and blend in, we have done this with trex deck and one other I can't think of off the top of my head. but I think if you want the look of the 4" -6" staggered , it will be "busy " enough not to notice the joints.
