Southwest Florida's most famous races are going prime time. Suncoast Charities for Children’s 31st Annual Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix will be creating spectacular wakes off Lido Beach over Independence Day weekend, with events kicking off this Saturday. The races have landed an hour special on CBS Sports Network airing 7 p.m. July 15. The broadcast will feature seven powerboat classes expected to participate.

In addition to CBS Sports Network the inclusion of jet-ski racers and open-canopy style race boats has garnered coverage by Fox Sun Sports and MAV TV. Powerboat racers will vie for a slice of the $70,000 prize purse. The extra TV money means two full days of continuous racing, with 30 powerboats and 60 jet-ski racers already pre-registered to race.

This year’s races are being sanctioned by Offshore Powerboat Grand Prix and Powerboat P1 USA. This change was made since Suncoast Charities for Children could not commit to a five year contract requested by Super Boat International. “Like any special event, we have to take it one year at a time since this annual festival and race are contingent upon financial sponsorship support," said Lucy Nicandri, the festival's director, in a statement. "You can’t keep doing things the same way and expect to grow and secure key funding. This year’s sanctioning gave us an opportunity to grow and expand.”

Changes set for Sarasota Grand Prix

SARASOTA - This year's Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix Festival will feature racing over two days instead of one, with the main race to be aired on the CBS Sports Network.

Formerly known as the Sarasota Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix, the renamed event will have racing July 4 and 5 off Lido Beach. Green Light Media will film the entire race series. The Sarasota race then will be shown the following weekend in prime time on CBS.

The expanded weekend of racing will include the second round of the SuperStock Championships and AquaX Series, featuring P1 America's fleet of eight powerboats and more than 40 jet-skis. These races will be regionally televised by Fox Sun Sports.

This year's format will attract racers from around the world and offer a more "spectator friendly" venue. It will include race classes running together at one time, a live stream broadcast, and an expanded VIP area on Lido Beach.

On Friday, July 3, fans will get the chance to see the boats up close and meet the racing teams at the Festival of Boats and an expanded downtown block party. That morning a meet-and-greet at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota will allow fans to get signed autographs.

According to Festival director Lucy Nicandri, last year's Grand Prix Festival yielded a $26 million economic impact, with the securing of more than 15,900 hotel room nights. More than 89 percent of attendees surveyed indicated they came to Sarasota over the July 4th holiday for the Festival and race events.

"With inclusion of televised coverage showcasing this year's Festival and Sarasota around the world," Nicandri said, "we hope to boost that economic impact number even higher while, at the same time, provide a net increase of money raised for (Suncoast Charities for Children) that serves local special needs children, teens and adults in the Sarasota area."
