Project—Cat 300 Jackhammer Raceboat In The Works

I remember Conner showing Me that Boat at Sarasota a few Years back...It had really thin glass in the Cockpit.

Yep, it had less than 1/4" plexiglass, not polycarbonate. The rule for UIM, and still the rule for those guys even though I've pointed it out several times to their safety people, is:

508.29 - CLASS 3 REINFORCED COCKPITS CRITERIA
Window areas: • Material: Polycarbonate or similar. Glass (in any form) is specifically prohibited. • Min thickness of window : Side by side cockpits min 9.5 mm. Screens with curvature and/or tandem cockpit min 7.9 mm

So it was 3/64" for a curved window (0.03937 in.), and 3/8" for a flat window (0.374016), and could be, (still can be), acrylic which is "similar" to polycarbonate. This is nuts. That window would not withstand a hit of a fist. Acrylic is 17 times stronger than glass, polycarbonate is 250 times stronger than glass.

And, to top it off, that is for all of their Class 3 boats, which includes cats identical to our Super Stock class with twin 300 outboards that goes around 120 mph.......

So yeah, the new class Cat 300 has much better safety rules, no comparison to what they allow in UIM. Ask Vinnie and Loren what happens to an acrylic window when you stuff a SS at over 100! And that was 1/2" thick, not 1/4".

Cat 300 is 1/2" polycarbonate minimum.
