Powerboat Racing Returns This Weekend To Sheboygan Lakefront

I am thrilled to welcome back this exhilarating event to the Malibu of the Midwest. It not only showcases our city’s beautiful shoreline and Lake Michigan but also brings an opportunity for our talented local establishments and entrepreneurs to showcase their talents, further enriching the overall experience for our visitors and residents alike. These are some of the best summer events; start your engine, Sheboygan! Ryan Sorenson, Sheboygan Mayor

The 2nd Annual Sheboygan Midwest Challenge, produced by Powerboat P1 takes place this weekend August 9-11, and promises exhilarating powerboat racing on Lake Michigan. The weekend promises a festive atmosphere with two full days of world-class powerboat racing on Saturday and Sunday, featuring over 50 race teams competing for the checkered flag.

The fun begins on Friday, August 9, with a Downtown Block Party at City Green from 6-10 pm showcasing plenty of powerboats on display, concessions, and live music by the U.S. Army Rock Band at 6 pm and King of Mars at 7 pm. On Saturday race fans and teams are welcome to a Brat Fry at the Sheboygan Yacht Club from 11:00 am – 6:00 pm and enjoy a full day of powerboat racing action 11 am – 4 pm. On Sunday opening ceremonies begin at 10 am with a flyover by the US Air Force Aerial Events Team followed by non-stop racing action until 3 pm, with the Race Awards Ceremony rounding out the weekend at 5 pm in the VIP area. The best viewing area is along the lakefront at the end of South Pier Drive. Throughout the weekend, race teams will be on display in Deland Park with free shuttles to the event from various locations.

VIP tickets are still available, and this year’s VIP viewing experience offers upgraded amenities for guests, a live stream of all the race action, expanded seating options, and enhanced dining and beverage selections with a cashless experience making purchases a breeze. Corporate hospitality areas are also still available. Christy Masters, Hospitality Director shared, “We aim to create a memorable experience for race fans and attract more people to this thrilling sport.”

Last year’s event generated an estimated $4.7 Million in economic impact and attracted 43,000 visitors to the area. It not only boosted the local economy but also significantly raised the profile of Sheboygan, with Powerboat P1’s national and international television coverage showcasing the city’s many attractions to a worldwide audience of more than 230 million homes. Sheboygan Mayor, Ryan Sorenson, shared, "I am thrilled to welcome back this exhilarating event to the Malibu of the Midwest. It not only showcases our city’s beautiful shoreline and Lake Michigan but also brings an opportunity for our talented local establishments and entrepreneurs to showcase their talents, further enriching the overall experience for our visitors and residents alike. These are some of the best summer events; start your engine, Sheboygan!"

Community partners for the event include Visit Sheboygan, the City of Sheboygan, Mercury Racing, and the Sheboygan County Chamber. Net proceeds raised from this year’s event benefit will benefit the P1 Marine Foundation, a non-profit that focuses on conservation by raising awareness of threats to our oceans, supporting research, and providing youth scholarships for students going into the field of marine conservation.

Sheboygan received the APBA Best Race Site Award last year for hosting the inaugural Midwest Challenge. It is the third event in this year’s P1 Offshore series following races in Cocoa Beach, FL, and Lake of the Ozarks. Additional races include Sarasota, FL in September and St. Petersburg, FL in October.

The event is free to watch, and is great family entertainment, so come on down and join us!

Powerboat Race Weekend is Just Days Away

Preparations for the 2nd annual Sheboygan Powerboat Midwest Challenge have been underway since last year’s inaugural event, and come to a crescendo this weekend. The event, produced by Powerboat P1, takes place this coming Friday through Sunday, and organizers promise exhilarating powerboat racing off of Sheboygan’s Lake Michigan shoreline, accompanied by food, drinks, music and fun throughout. Festivities begin Friday with a downtown block party at Sheboygan’s City Green from 6-10 p.m., when attendees can stroll past many of the powerboats that will be competing, while enjoying live music, food and refreshments.

On Saturday, the Sheboygan Yacht Club is inviting race fans and teams to a brat fry from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. while powerboat racing takes place between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Sunday’s opening ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with a flyover by the US Air Force Aerial Events Team. Races will continue non-stop until 3 p.m., and results will be announced during a ceremony beginning in the VIP area at 5 p.m., best viewed from the lakefront at the end of South Pier Drive, according to organizers.
