North Miami man dies trying to retrieve anchor off Key Largo

A North Miami Beach man died after he jumped into the water to go after an anchor off Key Largo Saturday afternoon, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office says.

Deputy Becky Herrin says Damian Deandre Smith, 41, was aboard a private vessel with a group of people late in the afternoon. They were going to anchor in waters near Molasses Reef in about 50 feet of water. Someone on the boat threw the anchor into the water but it wasn't secured to the boat.

Smith put on a mask, snorkel, fins and weight belt and reportedly went into the water to retrieve the anchor. Others on the boat told Detective Vince Weiner they saw Smith surface once and then go back under. He did not resurface, Herrin said.

Crews from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard searched for him. Divers from Key Largo Fire Rescue on a private vessel were also in the area and they located found his body on the ocean bottom, near the anchor. An autopsy is planne
