Nominee: Dick Bertram

Dick Bertram, Nominee #1

Here is someone who was either one of the smartest guys who ever lived, or was in the exact right place at the exact right time, with the exact right vision....

I think probably all of that and more.

He saw a boat design he absolutely fell in love with. Then proceeded to have one built and drive it in a race. The record he set that very first race caused so many to be ordered he started a boat company.

Moppie, has everyone read about them????

This is my favorite quote by Dick. After the 1966 Nassau race I believe when his boat broke up and sank.

But Dick Bertram, who had lost $65,000 worth of boat and very nearly his life, could hardly wait to do it all over again. "If they made it any easier," he said, "It wouldn't be ocean racing—and I'd quit."
