Mirage Boats

So I was looking at the thread on this site with regarding old boats and pictures, and I came across a few people showing and talking about Mirage boats:

Anyhow, I found it interesting that they used Cig molds. Dont ask why, but I enjoy hearing about different manufacturers using molds bought/splashed from other companies. (How did Baja end up with a 36' Cig mold anyhow?)

Any rate, I saw the Mirage discussion and it made me remember a boat I saw for sale recently:

Thats a Mirage, again built off molds that were not originally theirs. (This time Formula) Does Mirage only build boats off molds from other companies? Im just curious. The boat for sale is interesting, right down to the Formula paint scheme.

Not trying to stir the pot, just trying to get some info. Thanks!

I was being nice, Ill let the guys with more boating experience/history make the comments, :lurk5:

Well...I am FAARRRR from the most experienced around here but I will step out there and say that boat is FUGLY. (disclaimer: this post in no way is meant to be a jab at Formula or Tristar Racing):)

A friend of mine picked one up simular to that one a few years ago, think it was an old race boat. Race hatches on it and it is set up with a short Stagger. Think it had small blocks in it.

The 26' Mirage,[ Formula] was not built by Mirage of Opa Locka Florida, these were built in Washington State. They were a Wellcraft Nova Knock off,, not even a Formula. They would not hold up in a real offshore water. The Mirage '9M-SS was a Cig hull knock off, and the Cig 28' was made from a 27' Magnum. Back In The Day they all copied Don's 27' Mag. I have had two 29' Mirages and they were all built with best equipment ready to race, thats why there boats that were made in the 70's are still here today. Buy the way the 30' Velocity was made off the 29' Mirage, even they were copied.

I have a little information for you..... The Mirage Boats built in miami were not copied from any company( Not Cigarette, not Magnum and definately not formula). My father (Estany Cortes) was the owner of Mirage. He designed and built the molds from scratch. The reason why its commonly mistaken that the Mirage was a splash off of a Cigarette is because my father was Don's right hand man when he started Cigarette and my father helped construct the molds. It is where he got some ideas for his own boat from. My father never copied a boat or did he ever use anyones molds. He busted his a** the good old fashioned way and built his own set of molds, thats where every Mirage he built came from. As far as Velocity goes, my father built and sold a 29' hull and deck that was copied and turned out to be the 30' Velocity.
