MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) – An early morning boating accident has killed three people off the coast of Miami Beach.
One of the deceased is Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez.
The Marlins released the following statement Sunday morning:
“The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.
“Today’s game against the Atlanta Braves has been cancelled.”
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue received a call about a possible boating accident at around 3 a.m.
Upon arrival authorities found the boat upside down and crashed into rocks.
Three victims were found dead and rescuers continued searching for more people.
The boat involved in the crash is approximately thirty feet long.
Identities and genders of the other two victims have yet to be released as Fire Rescue and Coast Guard continue to investigate the scene.
Fernandez, 24, was viewed as one of the best young pitchers in all of baseball.
In four years with the Marlins, Fernandez had a 38-17 record with a 2.58 ERA and 589 strikeouts in 471.1 career innings pitched.
