MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) – An early morning boating accident has killed three people off the coast of Miami Beach.

One of the deceased is Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez.

The Marlins released the following statement Sunday morning:

“The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.

“Today’s game against the Atlanta Braves has been cancelled.”

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue received a call about a possible boating accident at around 3 a.m.

Upon arrival authorities found the boat upside down and crashed into rocks.

Three victims were found dead and rescuers continued searching for more people.

The boat involved in the crash is approximately thirty feet long.

Identities and genders of the other two victims have yet to be released as Fire Rescue and Coast Guard continue to investigate the scene.

Fernandez, 24, was viewed as one of the best young pitchers in all of baseball.

In four years with the Marlins, Fernandez had a 38-17 record with a 2.58 ERA and 589 strikeouts in 471.1 career innings pitched.

Coast Guard to look at jetty in Jose Fernandez boat crash

MIAMI (AP) — U.S. Coast Guard officials say they'll examine lighting on the Miami Beach jetty involved in a boat crash that killed Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and two other men last month.

Rear Admiral Paul Thomas said in a letter this week to U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio that the Coast Guard is commissioning a new analysis of the north and south jetties at the entrance to a channel that runs past the southern end of Miami Beach. The letter says an analysis performed last November found that aids to navigation in the area met boaters' needs.

Fernandez's crash remains under investigation.
The National League Rookie of the Year in 2013 and a two-time All-Star, Fernandez was a baseball star known for his exuberant personality and style of play.

Families of Men Killed in Pitcher José Fernandez Boat Crash Hire Attorney

The families of the men who died in a boating accident along with Marlins pitcher José Fernández have hired an attorney to settle their sons' estates.
In an interview with Florida newpaper Sun Sentinel, an attorney representing the families of Eduardo Rivero, 25, and Emilio Macias, 27, said no lawsuits have been filed yet, though the families want to investigate the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

"They pass no judgment and have drawn no conclusions, nor has anyone, on how or why this happened," said attorney Christopher Royer.

The three men died when their boat crashed into a jetty in the early morning hours of September 25th. Rivero worked at Carnival Cruise Lines and was also attending graduate school, according to family and friends. Macias worked in wealth management at Wells Fargo.

Fernández, a father-to-be, won National's Rookie of the Year in 2013. During his four-season career, he was named an All-Star player twice, the second one this year.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are currently investigating the incident and will not disclose any information until the investigation is completed.
"We will await the FWC's investigation results, the medical examiner's findings, and other law enforcement reporting," Royer said. "Until then we have no further comment except to send condolences to the families of all the victims."
