when i went to visit relatives in Switzerland years ago, i was suprised to learn that all able bodied people have to serve in their version of the National Guard, do training after "high school" and they are all issued military weapons that they keep at home. crime there is almost negligable

A very good friend of mine is Swiss. He's been telling me this very thing for years. I think he refers to it as a people's army or something to that effect.
