Jupiter and Seattle battle for the lead.....

Lakewood, Washington (CNN) -- One of four police officers who were fatally shot Sunday in a coffee shop outside Tacoma, Washington, may have shot the attacker before dying, police said.

Authorities are trying to determine who killed four Lakewood police officers in the coffee shop in neighboring Parkland on Sunday morning. Investigators are checking with area hospitals to determine whether the gunman sought medical treatment after the shooting, Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

"There's ... evidence that a Lakewood officer fired some shots, and we hope he hit him," Troyer said.

Troyer said authorities are seeking Maurice Clemmons, 37, of Pierce County as part of their investigation, though he did not identify Clemens as a suspect.

"We believe he is intentionally avoiding us," Troyer said, identifying Clemmons as a "person of interest."

Clemmons has "extensive violent criminal history from Arkansas, including aggravated robbery and theft," the sheriff's department said in a statement. He also was recently charged in Pierce County for assaulting a police officer and the rape of a child, according to the statement.

The officers -- three men and a woman -- were sitting in the coffee shop before the start of their shifts when a gunman shot them at about 8 a.m. PT, Troyer said. The shop is a place where area law enforcement officers regularly gather to share information, he said.

The attacker walked to the counter as if to place an order before he pulled a gun out of his coat and fired, Troyer said. Two of the officers were "executed" as they sat at a table, another was shot when he stood up, and the fourth was shot after struggling with the gunman all the way out the door, Troyer said.

Shooting in Washington "After, we believe, some of the officers were shot, one of them managed to fight his way with the suspect ... all the way out the the doorway until he was shot and died of a gunshot wound."

Sunday's incident was the first time the Lakewood police department lost any officer to a shooting. Authorities have not released the officers' names.

Two employees of the coffee shop and other customers inside Forza Coffee Company were unharmed, Troyer said. One employee fled through the back door when she saw the shooter pull out his gun, he said.

"As you can imagine, they are traumatized," he said of those inside the coffee shop. "Some are in shock."

Investigators have not come up with possible motives, police said.

Families of the officers have been notified, Troyer said. All of the officers were in uniform, wearing vests and had marked patrol cars parked outside, he said.

Police are looking for one man in connection with the attack, though authorities are not ruling out the possibility that a second person was involved, Troyer said. A $10,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest, he said. Surveillance tapes from multiple location are being reviewed.

Authorities were conducting searches in numerous locations, and dogs had been brought in to attempt to track the suspect, Troyer said.

Some tips have come in, and investigators were following leads, one of which turned out to be "an unfortunate hoax," Troyer said. A Tacoma man called "multiple people" claiming to be the gunman, though authorities determined the man was lying.

The man was arrested and now faces obstruction charges, Troyer said.

A couple of blocks surrounding the coffee shop were cordoned off. Several other police agencies were on scene to assist.

Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire, in a statement, said she was "shocked and horrified" at the shootings.

"I offer whatever support is needed to the Pierce County Sheriff in their search for the perpetrator," Gregoire said.

Lakewood is about 40 miles south of Seattle and 10 miles southwest of Tacoma.

Bystanders gathered outside the Forza Coffee Company, some of them in tears as they spoke to CNN affiliate KING.

The coffee shop is on the edge of McChord Air Force Base. Spokesman Bud McKay said the base was not shut down, but security was ramped up around the perimeter as a precaution.

The military has offered assistance to police, he said, but it has not been requested.

JUPITER — Jim and Muriel Sitton returned to their home this afternoon for the first time since a Thanksgiving shooting spree killed their 6-year-old daughter and three other relatives.

The Sittons hosted a Thanksgiving meal for 17 people at their house on Via Veracruz in Jupiter. At 10 p.m., police allege, Paul Michael Merhige opened fire, killing his aunt, Raymonde Joseph, his twin sisters Carla Merhige and Lisa Knight, and 6-year-old Makayla Sitton. Two others attending the dinner were also shot.

The Sittons allowed a coworker to film their daughter's bedroom on Sunday, and Jim Sitton told Channel 5 he had feared the emotions that he would face upon seeing it. Instead, with the ruffled bed neatly made and the dolls and toys straightened just so, the Bible marked where she had been reading, the room seemed to bring him peace.

"I was dreading coming in here," he said. "But once I did, I just see all the evidence of her specialness and uniqueness."

He held up the last photo ever taken of her, in a pretty Thanksgiving holiday frock.

"She's beautiful," Sitton said.

Police said Sunday they hope a $10,000 reward will yield tips that lead them to Paul Michael Merhige. The U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force offered the reward for information leading to Merhige's arrest. The Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office has issued an arrest warrant for Merhige for four counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Police are looking for Merhige, 35, in Florida and Michigan.

Family members of the victims told Jupiter police that Knight was pregnant, but a spokesman for the police said they had not independently confirmed that by Sunday. If they do, it would be up to the state attorney's office whether to charge Merhige in the death of the unborn baby.

Meanwhile, the attack is reviving memories of another tragic mass shooting in the Merhige family. In 1973 Paul Merhige's aunt, opera singer Salwa Merrige-Abrams killed her husband and her two children at their home in Miami. She was the sister of Merhige's father, Michael, who attended Thursday's Thanksgiving dinner.

Several days after the mass shooting, Merrige-Abrams killed herself by overdosing on prescription pills.

Suzanne Merhige, a cousin to the family, said on Sunday that words couldn't begin to express the shock the family is going through.

"There is nothing evil in any of this family," said Merhige, who lives in Daytona Beach. "These are good, sincere, people. They may have been suffering with Paul, but what I do know is that this is a very good family."

In 2006, Carla Merhige accused her brother Paul of domestic violence in family court, although the case was later dropped.

Vanessa Archer, a co-worker and friend of Carla's, said she never showed any signs that she felt she was in danger.

"God no," Archer said. "She was a great person and a wonderful colleague. She gave so much to foster care children. It's a huge loss for the community."

Friends and family will gather Monday night at Our Lady of Lebanon Church in Miami for a memorial to the twin sisters.

Patrick Knight, Lisa's husband, was also shot. He remains hospitalized but is expected to recover.

The heartbreaking account of how a mentally troubled relative broke bread with his estranged family and then systematically began killing them has provoked an outpouring of sympathy from strangers. Channel 5 said many people are asking where to send flowers and cards to the Sittons.

Tacoma guy is being reported dead......Jupiter guy is still on the loose (though I suspect he is dead somewhere by his own doing like rolling car towards lake and shooting himself before it sinks). Cops haven't found him or the car.....

The latest news is that the alledged shooter was serving a 95-year sentence in Arkansas when Mike Huckabee was the governor. Huckabee pardoned him!

Conservatives hammer Mike Huckabee over shooting

The conservative blogosphere unleashed a torrent of criticism against Mike Huckabee Monday after a man whose sentence he commuted as Arkansas governor was suspected of gunning down four police officers in Washington state over the weekend.

Maurice Clemmons, whom Huckabee granted clemency to nine years ago, remained at large after local police in Lakewood, Wash. mistakenly thought they had him trapped in a house early Monday. Clemmons is reported to have shot the officers as they were sitting at a table in a local coffee shop.

While many details of the murders were still unclear Monday, leading online conservative voices were quick to pass judgment on Huckabee, whose 2008 presidential campaign was forced to respond to accusations that he was too lenient with violent criminals during his years as governor.

“The man being sought by police was granted clemency by former GOP Arkansas Mike Huckabee despite his violent history and vehement protestations from prosecutors and victims’ family members,” wrote conservative Michelle Malkin on her widely read blog. “This disaster is just one of Huckabee’s ill-considered clemency legacies.”

Tacoma guy is still on the loose.......not dead, error in reporting

Now he is dead.....apparently had family helping him but the clue of lots of bloody bandages was left at almost every place he had been. One of the cops shot him in the torso during the gun battle.
