how to tie my outdrives together

So last month 38 nautical miles off the Oregon coast I hit something that broke the gimbal ring on my left outdrive which immediately swung over and took out the gears and prop on the right outdrive. It was a rather sudden stop and we did a little unplanned camping on the water waiting for the coast guard to find us 22 hours later.

What is the best way to tie the outdrives to prevent such revolting developments in the future?

A basic tie bar setup... but if your intent on phucking something up that good, not much is going to help...

I think he means that even with a tie bar, you hit something that hard, you're camping.

Not to say a tie bar is a bad thing. Looks like you have alphas from the pic, at least trying to see the ram. You can find tie bars that attach in a couple of different ways. The most straight forward may be something with yokes that attach using the trim ram bolts. The yokes bolt to the drives, the bar bolts to the yokes, and a threaded part of the bar allows adjustment for width.
Other styles use drive cap bolts or replace the drive caps with a cap that has attachments for the tie bar.

The boat has twin 165 Mercs. I'm not sure they used the Alphas on those?

I think we're going to need a couple pics of the transom of the boat and the drive types.

Well, from what I've found, the 165's did most often come with the Alpha drives. So. that's a good thing. Others have done exactly what you are trying to do.

we were off Winchester bay tuna fishing. I am going with Chinese Submarine. and yes we camped for about 24 hours. Just an observation if you ever think of buying a EPIRB do it.

We fished for tuna a couple times off the Columbia River, but only when the Japenese Current would edge closer to the coast. Sometimes it would come as close as 25 to 30 miles.

Used to Dunebuggy along the Winchester Bay Dunes!! Awesome dunes there!!!!!!
