ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Super-fast-racing-boats are back in the St. Louis-area this week.
For the first time in 32 years, Formula One Powerboats are returning to Alton, Illinois to race on the Mississippi River.
"The Formula One powerboat is the hardest cornering racing vehicle on earth," said Tim Seebold, Managing Director of the Formula One Powerboat Championship.
These boats go as fast as 120 miles per hour and pull 7 G's on turns.
"With the Catamaran Tunnel design, you are packing as much air underneath the boat as you can to lift the boat out the water," said Seebold. "So when it's running correctly down on the straightaway, you only got to put the boat in the water."
Seebold says boats will be racing throughout the weekend in the Midwest Nationals.
On Friday night, there's a meet and greet with some of the drivers at Mac's on Belle Street and you can see the boats up close.
On Saturday, there will be several races and the city of Alton is bringing back the Mississippi River Festival with live music.
On Sunday, it will wrap up with more racing and the awards ceremony.
General Admission is free but tickets are available for bleacher sets and VIP experiences.
