On this one I'm not buying the ending happily story, unless the firearm was trigger coded or had a locked tigger mechanism that is impossible to remove.
There is no way a gun should be left in an unattended, or at least not visually monitered, vehicle in a strange town in my opinion. As the police said, that is usually what they are looking for.
