Computer Question

I'm buying my son a laptop for his birthday. We probably look at something used on E-Bay to find out if he will even use it. He's 10 years old and plays a few simple games, visits youtube and visits a couple school websites online.
We will hook up to wireless DSL.

What is the Mininum RAM, storage, speed, yada, yada, yada and any other computer lingo I should look at.

Thanks

Look in the Best Buy, Circuit CIty ads on Sundays. Some times you can get new for 350-500. That's more than enough computer for a young kid these days.

Dell has entry-level laptops that will greatly out-perform something a couple of years old and will come with a warranty- for the kind of budget you're looking at. Used laptops are typically losing propositions- they're not nearly as durable as a desktop and way more expensive to repair.

Check here for Dell coupon codes- http://www.thetechzone.com/hotdeals.php

Dell also has good deals on returns and refurbs- all with warranties.

Having said that, a 10-year-old probably doesn't have any need for a laptop. They're fragile and very expensive to fix. Unless he travels with it (he's 10) a desktop does everything the same and is much less breakable. If he spills pop on the keyboard, you're out 20 bucks. Plus, the desktop stays where you put it and doesn't find its way behind closed doors where God only knows what he might run across. Computers can be wonderful, but they can also be very dangerous for kids. I'm guessing you don't want your young child watching snuff porn.

i second the desktop idea. they are also usually cheaper for one with similar components to the laptops you will be looking at.
