If Obama wanted people to get rid of their pickup trucks and SUVs and get hybrids, it didn't work... :lurk5:

Clunker pickups traded for new pickups

WASHINGTON – The most common deals under the government's $3 billion Cash for Clunkers program, aimed at putting more fuel-efficient cars on the road, replaced old Ford or Chevrolet pickups with new ones that got only marginally better gas mileage, according to an analysis of new federal data by The Associated Press.

The single most common swap — which occurred more than 8,200 times — involved Ford 150 pickup owners who took advantage of a government rebate to trade their old trucks for new Ford 150s. They were 17 times more likely to buy a new F150 than, say, a Toyota Prius. The fuel economy for the new trucks ranged from 15 mpg to 17 mpg based on engine size and other factors, an improvement of just 1 mpg to 3 mpg over the clunkers.

Owners of thousands more large old Chevrolet and Dodge pickups bought new Silverado and Ram trucks, also with only barely improved mileage in the middle teens, according to AP's analysis of sales of $15.2 billion worth of vehicles at nearly 19,000 car dealerships in every state. Those deals helped the Ford 150 and Chevy Silverado — along with Ford's Escape midsize SUV — climb into the Top 10 most-popular vehicles purchased with the government rebates. The most common truck-for-truck and truck-for-SUV deals totaled at least $911 million.

"If we're looking for the environmental story here, we're going to be disappointed," said Jeremy Anwyl, chief executive at Edmunds.com, an analyst firm. "It might have started out from the perspective of improving the environment, but it got detoured as a way to stimulate the economy."

And it only cost us $24,000 per car that was bought, sweeeeet! I love it when a government plan comes together

Oh, and who is going to buy a new golf cart to take advantage of the $4500 rebate for "Low Speed Electric Neighborhood Vehicles" ???

Was talking to a guy (at the bar) last night who sells them. He said he can't get enough of them. Selling for around 7K.

BR1 (Dan) tried to trade his Ram 2500 on a Pontiac G6 on the CFC program. Wasn't allowed - would have had to trade for another 3/4 or bigger truck.

That's an interesting study that came up with this, but I never saw what their methodology was for determining what was really an incremental sale vs pull ahead?

What I think it did more than directly sell cars is get people to think buying a new car was OK again, wether with the program or not maybe?

Obama's campaign slogan should have been...

"Caveat Emptor"

yep, we got the ol' bait and switch alright.

I've never owned anything but a truck and never will. Cash for clunkers, my azz. It's going to go down in history as one of the dumbest ideas ever.

Got to agree.
I've been driving some form of P-up truck for almost 20 years, and really couldn't see myself driving anything else as my daily driver.

I have a couple of daily drivers. But I have owned a pickup truck of one kind or another since the mid-eighties and I will only be going larger this next (upcoming 3/4 ton) truck.

NICE!!! :sifone:

bush drove the economy so far down the toilet this had to happen to create jobs and keep the auto companies in business.

on a serious note. the cash for clunkers was really a bad idea, why would you destroy perfectly good running cars just because they get good gas mileage. some people cant afford to trade in and buy new even with the extra money, they need parts to fix their stuff. and how the hell does obama plan to pay for all of this nonsense is what i really want to know. from the way he keeps doing things not only will we be buying things from china, we'll be owned by china... the american republic of china.

Well, someone had to ensure that people got more loans that will never be paid off, so that we can have another round of bailouts. There's way too much tax revenue coming in, and it needs somewhere to be appropriated.

It was hard to watch running engines be fragged. That wouldn't have happened in my parents generation.
Soon the idiots will control us due to sheer numbers.

I have owned a GM pick up since 1989, always at least one to as many as 4 at one time. They serve a purpose that a Prius never will. If I didn't need one for work or boat pulling I would never own one (they are slow, handle like sh!t and get bad gas mileage). But until I no longer need one, I will always have one! I think the same of all SUV's as well.
