Team 50 Catalina Ski Race 2013

This is a race I always wanted to enter (when I was really young). I used to practice skiing around Sauvie Island in Oregon. I'd be beat by the time I made it around and that was only barely over 40 miles, so I had to do it twice.

That would have been good practice, Paul.

Always read about, the Catalina ski race in the magazines, but never made it out there.

Back east here, we had Lake Winapasaukee ski racing. That lake is in New Hampshire and they would have 50 and 75 miles races. I first started racing behind my Rayson Craft SK boat and eventually as my boats changed, raced behind my 24 twin sterndrive Banana Boat.

In the early days, the little Magnum Missiles were the outboard boats to beat. With that design, they could handle the choppy water and have the speed to keep up near, the front of the pack.

I raced on a 6 foot 3 inch Rogue ski from California, with a 185 foot tow line with twin handles.

How tight were the corners on that Lake?

This was in the 60's and some of the checkpoints were 180 degrees. They were usually at the end of the race and the boats and skiers were stretched out a lot by then......but if you were close you had 180 plus feet of tow line to mind and the tow boats could not cut too short or the line would droop.

The lake itself was 25 miles or so long and could get pretty choppy with the winds coming down out of the mountains.
