Boating Tragedy in St. Pete Friday Night

Street lights haven't prevented drunk drivers from killing themselves or others. Hanging a light on here may help, but it won't solve the core problem. You had inexperienced kids, alcohol and speed-at-night all working against them. And as long as these factors exist so will this problem.

To give you guys a better idea about what's going on here see the pics. Pier or not, lights or not, it's not where you want to be navigating a boat. Look at the depth, too!!

I also marked the channel for clarity.

well, looks like the state just incriminated themselves

That's what I was thinking, lawsuit?

Also, I wonder if there was a problem with lighting because it is so close to a runway. I'm sure the FAA has strict rules...Type of light, proximity to runway, color, ect.

Lawsuit?...yep, you know it's coming. I'm sure they're already banging down the grieving parents' front door.

As far as lighting the pier, ya sure it couldn't hurt, but not exactly necessary given proper boat navigation.

Unlit pier or not, the next jackazz will just run right up onto the airport. I mean you can't just light up every single inch of every seawall on every single navigable waterway so someone doesn't hit it. Drunk happens. Stupid happens. Accidents happen.

+1

I was given the keys to our boat at age twelve and given full run of lake erie in a sixteen foot Lyman Islander. At that time i possessed more real boating experience then most adults do today. I also had the benefit of being taught by my grandfather over my youngest years and had been on the water since i could walk. I dont even consider darkness a navigational issue. Education is everything, along with being a conscientious and sober boater, your passengers depend on it. Its so sad to hear of something like this, something that could have been avoided. Accidents do happen but its possible to stack the odds in your favor. Thoughts and prayers to the family's involved.
