By Naples Daily News staff report
4:35 p.m., Thursday, February 26, 2009

A Miami man was arrested early Thursday after deputies discovered he was towing a stolen boat from Hillsborough County.

Collier County sheriff’s deputies spotted Damian Valdes, 32, driving a red pickup truck that was towing a 36-foot Formula boat covered in white plastic on Collier Boulevard around 3 a.m. Valdes pulled into a gas station to refuel and then began driving eastbound on U.S. 41 East, according to reports.

Reports said deputies stopped Valdes on Joseph Lane and discovered that the boat trailer did not have proper tags. Inside the truck, the report said deputies found a propane tank with a connected hand torch, bolt cutters, wrenches and a fence post that was cut in half.

According to the report, Valdes was unable to explain why he was towing the boat and could not show any paperwork proving its ownership.

Deputies learned that the boat had been stolen from a sales lot in Riverview and is valued at around $105,000.

Valdes was charged with grand theft, grand theft auto and improperly attaching a license plate tag.
