Can someone tell me why the Avalanche is $10,000 more than the Silverado Crew Cab? Except for a bunch of plastic in the Avalanche, I can't see $10,000 worth of difference!

Lower volume. Tooling isn't cheap. The whole midgate is an expensive addition. Adds up quick.

I have to second that. I love Avalanches, I had one and my dad has dad 3. If I were in the market for a 1/2 ton truck it would be at the top of my list. One of the nicest riding trucks I have ever been in

Haven't looked at the Avalanches in a while, but the new one's don't have much of a towing capacity if I remember correctly. Since they did away with the Avalanche 2500's, I don't think it would be able to legally tow a Cig....but then again I have seen them towing some pretty big boats before.

1 ton Ford for towing for me, pretty sure avalanches are rated the same as a 1/2 pickup?

On top of what Matt said, which is spot on, I believe the 'lanche has the nicer "SUV" instrument panel, etc vs the truck one. You'd have to get the LTZ truck to get the same stuff I think.

My neighbor has bought 3 and we still make fun of him. The most he has ever carried in the bed was bag mulch from Home Depot or his kid's bikes. He totalled one (head on with a Suburban) and subsequently bought another one being a believer in the crash worthiness.
I prefer the 1500 Crew, the body work on the Avalanche reminds me of an Aztek.......

I bought my '04 2500 Avalanche last year for 16K, super clean, and had under 40K miles on it. It is equipped exactly as Sydwayz listed.
Only things I've had to do was new tires and battery, and other normal maintenance. Had a problem with the gauge cluster about 2 months ago, but it was on recall and fully covered by the dealer.
Towed my boat across country and through some pretty windy mountain roads (and the trailer has no brakes) no sweat.
I absolutely love the look of the truck, and I think it looks a lot "meaner" with all the cladding and the design of it than what is currently offered.
At this point, there is nothing else I'd rather be driving. And, I plan on having this truck for a long time. Hell, my wife even prefers driving it over her H3 that we bought new in '05 and only has 24K on it.
The interior is huge, and comfortable. I had to learn to be gentle on the accelerator with the 8100 from a standing start, because it WILL light up the tires if you step into it hard.
It's a great truck, and I'm very pleased with it.

My 2004 Chevy Silverado Z71 has 141,000 miles. I recently replaced the water pump. But, except for tires and a battery every 60,000, it has been maintenance free.
I wonder if they will swap trucks with me?

Mine had a tranny issue when it was brand new, but it was taken care of under warranty.
If you do go with an Avalanche 2500, get a 2003 or later. They improved the interior ergonomics a bit in 2003 vs. 2002; and the cladding went to the darker color in 2003 which did improve the looks & it's wear capability.
(The light gray 2002 cladding has a tendency to "zebra stripe" as it ages. It's manageable with a sealant "wipe" they sell you from the GM parts counter, but depending on the sun/weather abuse your truck sees, you need to reapply the sealant more often. The 2003+ does not suffer from this issue at the same degree.)

the newer ones fab too especially on the top, my dads 04 faded from sitting outside while he was at work.
