Anyone ever "paint" their shingles.....??

Like to change the colour......bought this house a few yrs back and it had a new roof, great....unfortunately we hate the colour.....red brick with a green roof, we want to change it to a sandalwood to match the garage etc.....the roof is in great shape and is not that old.....I know there's some rubberised products out there that do this....anyone ever use one?

Going under the assumption that you have asphalt shingles. There are several companies that make colored asphalt sealer for driveways and parking lots, its not cheap but depending on how big the roof is, it shouldnt take much. Not sure if it would work on shingles but the guys at Sealmaster could tell you for sure.

I was a roofer and have seen it done more than once, we would always keep the leftovers from a job and wind up with a bunch of different colors in inventory, you always know someone with very little money that needs a roof, so multi colored it is, when that is all they can afford. Use an airless sprayer with a good outdoor paint and you can choose whatever color you like. PS all the McDonalds with shingles on them are painted red.

something to keep in mind if you do paint or dye it. Most shingles have a slight color difference between batches and when you lay them out they are staggered to spread this out. Its that slight differential in color that is appealing to the eye, even the edges and seams of the shingle add to this as well as the reflective properties if the aggregate used. If you make the entire roof one uniform color you may not like it. just a thought

just use a latex based paint, the solvents in oil base will eat the shingles.

Never heard of painting a roof.
I would strongly recommend against doing this.
I think it would wind up looking very strange.
Then because the paint looks so weird, you're going to need to replace the shingles with what you wanted in the first place.
Cut out the middle-man here.

Very Popular out west is to have a wood shingle roof stained green or blue. It looks good on a classic brick house IMHO.

thanks for the replies.....the stuff Im talking about is more like liquid rubber as opposed to paint, you apply it with a roller.....I had a something about it in a home improvemnt flyer...that I must have thrown out.....if it didnt work worst case scenario I would replace the roof.....which I would do anyway

pull, save the money on the elastomeric coating you are talking about, latex and airless is the way to go and less money if you do not like the look.
