Description
This is NOT a Wellcraft Scarab but 1 of 10 Kevlar 29 foot boats built by the founder of Scarab Larry Smith. This boat is powered by very fresh (15 hr) 350 CI professionally built Chevy small blocks with each doing a conservative 350 hp. This particular boat is a fast pleasure boat for a budget price. The interior is good but not perfect which is the same for the exterior. My reserve is low as I have a 35’ Café Racer coming to town in two weeks and this boat is going to a new owner. This is a special boat with a lot of heritage and is an extremely strong boat. It is not a race boat but a very stable lake or ocean boat. It has a very good stereo system, a bimini top, functioning gauges and a good interior. The gel coat was freshened but I don’t know when.

Wonder what that would do with 350hp smallblocks and TRS. Before I bought my Panther I was looking at a really clean 1976 30' with smallblocks that would only run 52mph, but I believe those were only 280hp/ea.

Team Scarab 9 Meter by Larry Smith yes, but not a Kevlar49 boat. This boat changed hands for about the same money a couple of years ago. The first Kevlar49 boats

were made in 1978. Two most famous ones were; the ones made for Betty Cook to drive in her Sea Of Cortez record run, (had twin Mercury outboards). The second was

made for Jeff Brown for the 78/79 race season, had 2 x SBC's and won the National Production Class Championship in 1979, boat was called 'Pure Insanity' P-38.

P.S. A Team Scarab 9 Meter with 2 x small blocks and about 350 hp will run 60 knots if set up right. D.S.

Thanks for the pics and info. Sweet......

SSo no Kevlar boats were made by Smith before 1978? Or just in the 29' model?

1978 was the first year for a Kevlar49 boat from Team Scarab. I share this great article that

the wonderful site powerboatarchive.co.uk has. I hope they don't mind me sharing it. Bertram

had built several offshore race boats in Kevlar49, but it was the manufacturer Hydra-Sports

that made the first Kevlar reinforced canoes and boats. Note that DuPont had a rep. at this

record setting run by Betty Cook and Team Scarab. They were keen that the event would bring

more manufacturers to adopt this then exotic material and that's what happened as We know.

P.S. Ex. Jeff Brown National Champion boat in the photo. Nowadays with this wonderful family

in the California Bay Area. D.S.
