1080p vs 720p on 50" (and smaller) HDTV's

Here's a quick question for the experts. Many of the "Black Friday" deals I see are for 720p HDTV's and not for the 1080p HDTVs.

For a HDTV (LCD or Plasma) that is 32" to 50", will my eyes be able to tell a difference?

Is a Samsung worth an extra $100 over the no-name brands?

Forget your eyes, hardly anything is even in 1080P.

ESPN, ABC, etc. are 720P

NBC and their networks are 1080i (not 1080P)

I have a 720P 50" plasma, looks fantastic. I also have a 1080P 58" that doesn't look as good because of the size of the TV. My brother in law just bought a 60+ inch 1080P and it looks like crap because of his cable feed... not the TV.

So... I'd happily buy a 720P TV again. makes no difference for the average guy.

I wouldn't get a Samsung. Have a DLP Samsung and after 2 years this is what it does. No that's not on a star gazer channel....they get the "white dot" syndrome. Fixed it myself, but it was a $160 part & Samsung doesn't do anything for you....and there's a ton of these that it's happened to. It's only on DLP's, but Samsung has left a bad taste in my mouth

their unloading all the 720s for a reason?? it does not have nothing to do with your eyes,, it,s what they will be transmitting in the near future 1080,,check it out before you buy,

I would rather have a good quality lower resolution set then a crappy one just for the 1080 spec. You watch video not specs on a piece of paper. Try and get to a place that has PROPERLY calibrated sets and let your eyes tell you what you want. In the larger sets the higher resolution can be good because you get smaller pixels and if you have seating that is close it will look better otherwise.... most of the time 720 can acutally give you a better picture because you are not upconverting the image..... The bottom line is that there is a lot more to it then just ONE spec...

I spent over 4 grand on my 60" Sony 1080P a few years ago. Then I got the "green glob syndrome". A undetected defect in the light engine caused the screen to fade to green. Sony covered the repair, even though it was well out of warranty. Thanks Sony

A decent 720 is better than a 1080p with lousy processor.
99% of your TV watching will NOT be 1080p. I would go with the name brand 720 and RUN from the no name junk.
With the Samsung; if it breaks, you'll get ****ty service vs no service when (no if) the no name breaks!

Diff of a $100? That's a no brainer.

Huh? What you buy? I can nearly ALWAYS make a decent big TV look good!
The chitty cable signal is tough to get around, but if it is digital, there is another problem.

Cable Co's compress the chit out of stuff nowadays to fit all the content down the pipe. Wanna see what real HDTV looks like? Try Blueray....or get an antenna and look at what your local stations are broadcasting over the air.....for free.

YES!!!! That is a nice TV! Be careful - All these door busters - the store may only have one or two of them. They are designed to get you in the door.
