    Varnish!

Almost all the old cedar strip boats were varnished all over back in the 50 & 60's. Factory finishes looked great. Too many coats with time by brush started to look ratty. Spray finish was always nicest but not easy stuff to spray. Never thin varnish with thinners to spray it.

    Old Bertrams

Bertam Boy - yes that's who I got the boat from Donskihp - the pop deck was an idea taken from the old VW camper bus back in the 60's for the same camping purposes

    Old Bertrams

Thanks guys. It's really a combination of a labour of love intertwined with a lot of indulgence. Mrs says this is my last one and I'm not arguing. It will serve me well for a lot of years. Just for personal taste, I even installed silent choice.

    Old Bertrams

My new/old 24 foot Bertram Moppie II. This is still an ongoing project but I have managed to cure all the mechanical bugs that messed up my summer plans in time to store it for the winter. It is a compromise from my many years of owning small offshore peformance boats (Donzi, Cigarette & Magnum...

    Help with 383 MPI

Reinspected every thing on Saturday morning. There was no little filter under the fuel pressure regulator. Reinstalled the cool fuel system back on the engine. Engine started right away and runs great. What really bugs me is I don't know what I have done. I can only assume that either something...

    Help with 383 MPI

Thanks Buizilla - I will do a complete check for it hidden inside before reinstalling the cool fuel package. I am not really sure that it would lower the upper rail pressure because it is in the return line to the fuel separator.

    Help with 383 MPI

The service book refers to and illustrates a cone shaped filter under the fuel regulator. This fuel cooler package had nothing under the regulator except the o-ring. There was one screen in each pump and there is another up on the rail assembly in the fuel pressure relief assembly. Those 3...

    Help with 383 MPI

I have a new 2006 383 MPI Mercruiser engine that sat crated for 4+ years. I installed it in my boat last month and after what I thought was a reasonably thorough pre service, started and ran it. Aside from lots of problems with the power steering that necessitated the replacement of both the ram...

    Mooring Whips?????

I've used the "Mooring Whip" brand for the last 20 years. Have had a Donzi Hornet, a 25 Magnum Sport and a 24 Bertram at various points in time over the past 20 years all on the same original set. I am in a high traffic location and have never regretted buying them. Single suggestion: don't over...

    Question for the Glass Gurus

Are you absolutely sure that you have stringers that far out? Usually they (stringers) follow the strake lines and the chine lines tend to be solid glass alittle thicker than the overall bottom. You may just have a dead air space between the floor and the bottom at that point. I'd play with a...

    Oil Question...

The brand new 383 that I have yet to fire up, will be broken in on Pennzoil 15W40 semi synthetic for 2 oil changes and then probably on to full synthetic.
