What makes the 39 more desirable than a 42x? I think i would rather have a 42 or 46x. Since i cant afford either, might as well add 7-11' in length to what i have now.

An enclosure will give you much better sound than free air. Free air's require a lot of power & do not have the same response as a sealed or ported enclosure. A sealed box is the easiest to build. Whatever sub you buy, it will come w/ a spec sheet. You can then use a tool like from Rockford...
