You're damn right on that one. Especially us middle-mgmt type guys.

I miss my self employed days. But, at the same time, I had a small General Contracting Co. - not like with the housing market my business would be doing very good there either...

JJ-P was taking this all a bit rough last night. It's hard, knowing how this is going to affect these peoples lives.
I'm a little more cold hearted than her. But, I spent the summer managing ~25 people in one department. The ones that didn't want to follow the rules and work, well, they didn't like me. So, they began quiting one after another.
The ones that didn't want to work, but needed the job (paycheck) either called in sick (ehem, cough...) or scheduled vacation times that I HAD to approve because of policy. HR didn't really step in to replace the people that quit, because we kind of saw this coming. This meant I was working all the hours to cover people that didn't show to make sure we still met production goals.
My take on it is that they caused it themselves. If they didn't want to show for work in the first place, they don't need to show at all.
I've fortunately moved into a different position in the Co. I couldn't keep going like that much longer.
But, it also makes me wonder just how long my own job is safe.

You just told the story of the last 3 years of my job (other than getting out!). It's funny, we were talking about "RIF"s (the gutless corporate term for "layoffs") and one of the guys we were talking about is currently terrified of losing his job... I think there's people who know they're heads are on the block at this point. Unfortunately, I've already ridden off all the bums who worked for me over the past year or so, and now the "average" performers are stepping in front of the cannons...

The other ugly part is when it comes to us. Middle and upper mangagment corporate types. Where are we going to go? I was talking to my wife about it last night. People who've been in a specialized carreer for a long time are really in a nasty spot when they get rolled out the door...

Went out to dinner tonight with one of the VP's, everyone is avoiding the talks about reduction of staff. Hate to be in the gray area "black or white" is where I like my entire life to be, not always an accomplishment.

We have a major problem on our hands right now. We have an entire generation that feels as if they're not only entitled to a job, but are entitled to a cool job that they enjoy and that doesn't interfere with their social and personal lives. Many mom's basements are going to be filling up quickly.

I sort of feel bad for them. Mine were raised without wants. But at the same time, I did my best to teach them about achievment and discipline. Many parents just did the first part-and did their kids no favors. It's been so easy to do well with little effort for so long, it will be interesting to see how our younger generation will dig themselves out of this shift in global economic balance.

I think the issue with my generation is that they simply have no work ethics, also the get out of college and demand to be at the top of a company and super high salary, I think it is very important to make your children earn thiers like my parents have done, I know what it takes to get ahead, and own a boat:rofl: I just don't get it Just my two cents, the older I get the more I get sick of whats going on in this country And one more side note when I was younger my friends were given cars from thier parents and I was pissed why not me? now I understand and don't blame my parents one bit for the job they have done...

Same here, and I agree whole heartedly. I started out in the industry I'm in at the age of 19 and made $3.05 an hour. The work ethics today suck.

The Criteria we set for the reduction in staff was any associate with an attendance or performance counseling. They will be gone within the next few weeks. But if you really analyze this, they caused the problem themselves. I realize there are single mom's that may have problems with babysitting and sickness, but I was also a single mom at the age of 22 and I made it my responsibility to have a "back up" sitter in case my daughter was not able to attend daycare due to illness.

People need to take their jobs seriously.

I am nice......and take peoples respective into consideration. I sit back analyze and don't make a solid opinion. And then I keep quiet.

My mom works with St. Vincent DePaul in Cincinnati as a volunteer. I don't know if any of you have those in your city or not, but they try to help out people who are in need. Since Christmas is coming up, she's received numerous requests for toys. She was telling me that people aren't happy with just getting one or two toys for their kids - they want a LOT of them. Her and I were talking that people just don't have the conversations with their kids any more - "times are tough and we're going to have to do without some things for now. That means you won't be getting many toys for christmas and we have to cut back on our spending" That just doesn't ever seem to happen any longer and people think that they are entitled to a lot of toys, etc when they've done nothing for them.

Not their fault- no more than it was leaving our borders so porous that we practically invited the population of Mexico in to do our cheap labor.

The job market expanded so rapidly that all the clean, English speaking kids got sucked upwards and their jobs got filled with those a step below and so on. I picked celery when I was 12- made 50 cents an hour. My nephew is in his 30's making a nice living off of paper routes. What does that tell you?

I haven't bought a newspaper in years, unless I wanted to use it to mask something off, or needed something to pack something I was shipping.
Then, with no skills, he'll wonder why he has nothing.

The Post Office is going to downsize with an early out offer, restructure of staff and layoffs, yes layoffs by spring probably.


We are cutting too much for a service company. We need to break even but lately we are lossing way too much money 2 billion plus due to gas prices
