21' apachee (250 Mercury) vs. 22' velocity (300 Johnson). They are both about the same price and shape. Which would you buy?:driving:

Apache for resale. More of a cult following.

Apache for rough water handling.

Velocity for flat/up to 2's overall speed.

Are the cabins similar? I've never been in a 21 Apache.....

Both boats have a padded keel but I believe the Apache will be a better riding boat. The Velocity has higher freeboard and a cabin while the Apache not really.

I've been on the 22' Velocity with an I/O and the ride was less than desirable in my opinion. Same guy owned an Apache with an O/B before that and said it handled better and misses it.

Speed maybe an edge to the Velocity.

We have a 22 velocity ob. The apache will be a better riding boat boat the velocity will be a touch faster

We mostly boat in the river here and once a year in Destin. The ride is important but i don't want to lose 10 mph for that. In the past we used the cabin for storage so that's not important. The last boat i had was a 25' Baja outlaw 502 and felt the boat had a lot of wasted space. I/O was cool to hear but a pain to work on. I felt that ride was more than adequate. I am not sure if the Velocity is a Kevlar hull or not. It's an 86 "regal" and I heard a few were built then. I heard the Apache is built like a tank....

The Apache is built nicely and it has a good bottom which gives it some speed! The bottom design was xerox'ed, then modified from another Linder/Luhrs design.

The older "Regal" Velocity's didn't have the best build quality in my opinion.

I'd test run both of them if you can, that way you know which one you like better.

The Velocity was a 24 but in the water in our area the Apache rode much better. I wish I never sold it, with a 225 Merc it did 68 & never broke. But drive both & you will see. The Velocity will be faster though.

THe Apache will run 70-71. I would think the Velocity would be closer to 80 but the V8 Johnson is much heavier so I'm not sure at least they are both quality boats I don't think either one would be a bad choice.

I was told the Johnson was a gas hog.

From the Velocity website....

In 1986, Steve leased the Velocity name and the 22 and 30- foot molds to Regal Marine; and they were built as Regal Velocity models. A year later Steve closed his plant in Pompano and moved his family north to Orlando so he could work for Regal. He was disappointed with the way Regal used the Velocity name and the quality of the boats produced. He felt they did not live up to the reputation Steve had worked so hard to build for the Velocity name.

In 1989, Steve started Thoroughbred Powerboats, which consisted of 3 models: 26- foot Summer Squall, 35- foot Majestic Prince, and 41- foot Bold Ruler; it was Kim’s idea to name the boats after legendary thoroughbred horses. Four years later, Steve regained control of what he started years ago- Velocity.

I had a 1991 26' Thoroughbred and loved it.

I was told the Velocity does 80 & the Apache does 65. Not sure since i have not driven the boats...

Years ago we put a new powerhead on a Regal Velocity for a customer and it was the Johnson but I don't remember it doing 80 mph. Very big/heavy engine. Of course we had no GPS etc. but it sure didn't feel like 80.

Now that Billy mentions his was 24', I remember the Regal we worked on had a lower freeboard and I don't remember it having a cabin.

Sorry for my memory, this was late 1990's.

I guess the Apache doesn't have a jackplate I think it was fastest with a chopper but i think with a 250 it waould be closer to 70-71 set up correctly. I know Bobby said they made a few different versions mine had the well for the outboard

No jack plate and does have to outboard well as well.
